What is so special about Explorer Heads?

i was just curious as to how they are different? I think i remember that some come with gt40 heads
Just wondering if someone could give me the low down on them and what year explorer to look for good ones

They flow better, have larger valves, pretty much a stock replacement, and they are cheap. The bad is that the P series you need special headers.

Cast Iron head.

The 40P's are prob the best head Ford ever put on a factory 302.


1996 and early 1997 have the Gt-40 heads similar to the 93-95 Cobra...but without EGR passages. mid-97+ have the Gt-40P.

Since there are so many available, prices have come waaaay down. I got my set for $250, but have seen guys getting them for even cheaper.

If your junkyard has an all-you-can carry day...go in and snaga set.

yea i got my gt40p heads upper and lower intake fuel rails injectors and throttle body for $150

1998 Ford Explorer Specs - CarsDirect

215 hp...


I'd be interested to see the torque range in comparison with the stock e7's. If those heads flow better there has to be a reason why the HP rating is only 215. What gives with that?

The ford Explorer ECM is Programed for low end power unlike the Mustang ECM.

Tuned for more low end power. Cam has a huge role in this

Plenty of guys have 300HP+ on P's. In fact, I think there is a 300rwHP on P's thread floating around.

I know there was one in 94-95. I think they were ported, or at least cleaned up, but the car made like 301 to the wheels.

I have a set of "P" heads at the machine shop as we speak.He's doing a valve job,and doing a full port and polish with a bowl blend.I also gave him a set of Trick Flow valve springs to install.He said there's a ton of power in these heads,especially compared to my current ported E-7 heads.I'll post the flow sheet when I pick them up.I'm going to use a Trick Flow Stage 1 cam in the explorer engine as well.The valve springs need to be swapped if you use these Explorer heads.The heads are great,but the springs are too soft for even the H.O cam really.Valve float....not cool.

I've been told explorer pistons have to be cut for PVC if your using any kind of aftermarket cam, could be wrong

Explorer pistons are the same as the 93+ Mustang with hypereutectic pistons. They'd probably need to be flycut for 2.02 intake valves, but I don't think you could fit a 2.02 valve in a GT40P head anyway.

IDK if you guys are talking about my car?But my old coupe made 301/318 at the wheels with P heads.Also what does the "P" mean in the GT40P? peace

In my humble opinion, GT40/GT40P heads are not worth it. By the time you get done buying the heads, upgrading the springs, and sending the heads to the machine shop to be decked/ported, you are close enough to the cost of a set of aluminum heads to make it worth waiting a little longer and just getting the aluminum heads.
Just my opinion and why I have twisted wedges.

Say you snag some GT40Ps for $250, then throw the Trickflow springs on for $130 from Summit. You are $380 into the heads. You can then use a dremel to smooth the exhaust ports (not port, just smooth out), and bolt on 40 HP N/A. For a guy like me, Im going to bolt on a Vortech next summer, and with my Trickflow intake, I will see about 400 RWHP instead of 325, all because of my $380 heads... To me, thats worth it.

Edit: I obviously have the supporting mods in mind, dont plan on just throwing the P's on a stock mustang.

I agree. A nice set of $1000 Aluminum heads would be great, but not everyone can swing it.

I got my P's for $250. All i need are some new springs and i'll clean them up myself. Cheap easy mod.


Down the road, when i build a nice 331/347, then i'll spring for some AFR's
