what is the difference between a flywheel and a flex plate?

actually the c4 can be had in both the 157 and 164 tooth f/p.

Actually the C-4 can have both you listed PLUS the Stang II's 147 tooth flexplate.

They look all most the same but the manual trans one is much Heavy'er?

I was told that both tranny have flexplates. But I guess i was wrong since i never had a manual tranny I only had to read about it.

Other than the bolt pattern for the crank and the starter ring gear, they look nothing alike. It's virtually impossible to mistake one for the other. Don't take it personal. This info isn't meant to be a flame, just the facts. I get thinngs wrong too sometime, no-one's perfect. And just because someone took the time to print info, doesn't mean it's 100% correct.

what about the 160 tooth or is that only for f/w?:SNSign:

ive heard they were in both but since ive never seen one in anything i dont bring it up. =)

they are both circular peices of metal with ring gears and a bolt pattern made for virtually the same purpose only difference is one is for manual and automatic...

sure they are easy to tell apart, but it doesn't change the fact that they are virtually the same thing.

i dont think anyone was truly trying to hurt anyones feeling, its all in good fun and all about learning. i dont consider the f/w and f/p virtually the same thing but i agree they that they are close. it would be very hard to confuse one for the other but it all goes along with experience. it is easily confusing when youve never seen, touched, smelled ,or tasted on =).

well they dont look the same to me. easiest thing is there isnt any friction area for the clutch so it must be a f/p. another thing is the ring gear on the f/w is pressed on if not billit and the flex plates ring gear is welded on. then of course you have weight and the fly wheel will weigh 10x more the the f/p.

yes they look like they are the same thing to my grandmother, but to me or anyone else that know what they are they arent. im not knocking you but hear say will get you in trouble and embarrassed..................just like my spelling LOL =)

They look similar... NOT the same. D. Hearne did a great write up. Learn from his experience and others. If you make a wild guess as to what something is or what it does, odds are it will be wildly wrong. You may get some good natured ribbing, but instead of getting defensive, learn to laugh at yourself. Yes we all make mistakes, and as the 1st of 12 steps to recovery, admit it was a mistake, laugh it off and learn from it.

Yep, this was one of our test aircraft a couple of years ago. It's one heck of a fun plane to test and ride in.

sweet. before i left NC (army) i seen them up and fling in new bern. i am also sad to say i seen the one that crashed here in AZ when i was training at MCAS Yuma. they are really cool, im glad they got the bugs worked out.
