what is this??

im swapping my '89 non airbag dash wiring, which is a real p.i.t.a. was told dash harness i bought ebay was 90or91 so im assuming has airbag. i don't recall my '89 non airbag having this computer onboard. what the hell is it? its the blue thing under the center console area. do i need it connected if i don't have an airbag??

Everything I've read on the subject suggests that the air bag control module is a blue box located behind the heater controls. So this fits the description. Having never seen it in person is the only reason I'm not saying thats def. it. I would lay 50 down that it is though. If you chose not to remove the module your air bag light will blink code 32. If you do not put an air bag light in, that module will give off 5 sets of 5 beeps every time you start the car and during certain intervals after running the car. ( read very very very annoying)

Another vote for the airbag module.

Strip the airbag system out. You'll be surprised at how much wiring is under the dash for that system. I found 2 blue modules I think (long long time ago) and at least 5 pounds of wire crisscrossing the car for that system alone.

Mine started to make a weird noise, kinda like feedback through speakers when you have a bad ground. Found out it was that airbag module. I removed it. Now my airbag light just stays lit instead of blinking. All I have to do now it remove the light from the dash.

No two ways about it, its the airbag module. I had to unplug mine cuz it kept beeping at me every 30 minutes i guess cuz one of the crash sensors was bad. Finally i just tore it outta there along w/ my crash sensors....hope i dont need it.

What will cause it to beep is if it doesn't have a light in the instrument cluster. Im assuming that since you are swapping a 90 + dash into your car you're putting a 90 + instrument cluster in also. So in short just rip it out, if its out of the car along with all associated wiring then it will not beep and there will be no lights blinking on the cluster.

Jiffy94 and powertrax91 if its out of the car then it won't beep and be annoying.

thats a fairly useful link for learning a little about the system

well you see i didn't really think that there was going to be a swap prob with my cluster but know i see otherwise. after i clean and transferred the wiring harness to the 89. i couldn't use the 90 dash cause the steering column holder (pastic part) was broken and the color was blue/grey vs. red/grey not . i'm just going to install the 89 dash with the 90 harness and find a 90 speedo with the correct connectors. i noticed last night the connectors where different too. funny how problems always arise. like i said PITA project.
