what is throuot bearing retainer

okay heres my story iv had my trans out twice the first time i had to change my rear main seal the second time i had to chang my clutch. so the day im looking in ford mag and i see this thing called a throut bearing retainer it says replace that old retainer with this one, well i dont remember seeing this part im my car and i dont have any clutch problems accept little almost like grinding feeling in the clutch only when car is on if you can help thanx

I HAVE 87 GT ALMOST STOCK

All T5 transmissions have a bearing retainer. It's the little collar that goes over the input shaft, that the throwout bearing rides on. It also serves the purpose of "retaining" the bearings on the input shaft.

And it goes without saying (but should be explicitly said) that you should use a Steel replacement (the stocker is aluminum, sans on Cobras).

is that the V-8 trans above or the 4 banger T-5? just wondering hard to tell from the photo.

I replaced my retainer years ago when i first installed a centerforce clutch.

The aluminum retainer was gaulded and worn out.

I THINK it was either popping or rattling when i would drive the car. I cant remember. That was like 7 or 8 years ago. Anyway......yeah, get the steel retainer.
