Thats a pretty awesome story! Wish my dad has something like that he'd pass down to me! haha

He's the coolest Dad in the World to me. Who gives a 16 year old a $29,000 (back in 1981) for their first car? I still hang with my Dad almost every chance I get, we worked together for 15+ years everyday. He is a car guy too so he and I plus my boys still hit all the car shows. It's fun. Now I get to be the cool Dad to my boys. They will be doing the restoration on the Delorean with me. My boys are 6 years apart so they will have to share it.

How does a car made of aluminum/stainless steel rot? I thought that was the main selling point of those DMC-12 cars. Maybe the frame and stuff is still steel?

I could be wrong, but isn't the frame composite and aluminum? What does rot is weather strips/seals etc.

Rot meaning, just sitting around. These cars are famous for sitting long periods of time and the fuel turning into varnish. Already happened to us once, what a complete utter mess. My Dad stopped driving it after his heart attack in 85, I was 13 at the time. The car sat for like a year in a half, never started it. It cost him thousands to get the fuel cleaned out of the tank, lines, fuel injectors, etc. After it got fixed I was driving it at 15 to school with him in the passenger seat. I would take him on business trips driving it to Orlando, Tampa while he was sleeping in the passenger seat (didn't even have a learners permit). Back to the Future movies were huge during this time, it made the car iconic. That's when the Chix came out of the woodwork for rides. After school at 16 almost every day I was driving daughter's and their hot moms around (they would have to sit on laps). This is a family website so I won't get into details.

The frame is aluminum which was a big deal back in 1981. Now it's the norm on exotic or super cars. The front and rear bumpers are plastic, same as today's Corvette bumpers. The clear coat would crack and spider web on Deloreans. They say this cars would never rust. When my Dad got hit on the driver's door and put a big scratch in it, two days later it was rust.

lower grades of stainless can rust.

Yep, 308, 304 rust especially. 316L (L meaning low carbon content) doesn't rust at all, but it's more malleable than it's lower grade cousins making it not ideal for just any application. You have to give in one area to gain in another with stainless...

My "dream car" was inspired when I was in the 1st grade. It wasn't the car itself that inspired me (though the car was a roots supercharged, big block 1st gen. Camaro) but rather what the car represented (fear, death, adrenaline etc.) and how it made me feel, which could really be a number of cars.

This particular car, was a DEATHTRAP. Primer gray, no carpet, ty interior, of questionable construction. It shook, it rattled, it rolled, it was mean and fast as hell and it scared the piss right out of you. Every time he mashed on the gas pedal, you weren't sure if you'd live to see him eventually hit the brakes. It was louder than all hell, it pulled like a rocket boosted tractor, it smelled like high octane fuel and oil and you weren't sure if it was the baddest car ever, or if it was held together with zip ties and staples. Every second you were in that car, your heart was pounding, your palms were sweaty, you were scared less....and you LOVED it. That feeling has stuck with me everyday since then.

So I'd have to say that my car would have to be the same as the car I just described to you because it's the only type of car that I've always wanted. Could this car have just as easily been a fox? Absolutely. Someday, it'll be MY CAR that scares the death out of any and all passengers brave (or foolish) enough to strap in.
