So I've been wondering for a while what kinda of oil is good for our cars. I use either Mobil 1 10w30 or Motorcraft Synthetic blend 10w30 and a Motorcraft FL1A filter. What do you guys use? This past change I gave Mobil 1 Clean 5000 a shot because I refuse to have anyone else change my oil and I'll be at school for 6 months without the resources to change my oil. I know I won't put on 5k during that time, but it will be 6 months without a change. You think this is safe? I mean I know its safe, but is it SAFE...I've for 114k on the ticker, and change my oil religiously every 3 months or 3k miles.

I run Valvoline 10w30/FL1A filter. Changed 3-4k miles.

When I had the heads off a couple weeks ago, everything was spotless, no wear in the cylinder bores, still crosshatched. I seafoamed it around 15k miles ago. Almost 140k on motor.

I am using mobile 1 syn. and fl1a, but I think I am going with just some motor craft or castrol next time. I am also thinking about using a cobra filter for clearance issues

Motorcraft FL1A filter, and usually whatever name brand 10w30 is cheapest. I'm not big on the whole synthetic oil thing. I'm sure it's beneficial in some ways, but I'm not spending twice as much for a quart of oil for 2 extra HP.

The oil should be fine. When you do take the car out, once it's warmed up, get on it a bit to heat the oil (to flash contaminates out of it. Contaminates mixing with oil can create acid).

Mobil 1 synthetic 10w30 since brand new and still going at 240k miles. Last owner was my girlfriends dad so he gave me a booklet of all the receipts.

Mobile 1 synth. 10w30 and FL1A filter (I think I actually ran 5w30 this last time as they were out of 10w30).

There is ONLY 1 product I buy at Wal-mart and that is Mobil 1 oil. They sell it in a 5qt jug for $21 or so. The absolute cheapest place I have found this oil and in a 5qt jug that is prefect for us anyway.

Watch out at wally world and other places and mobil 1 oil.

There is the full syn. mobil 1 oil at $21.xx.

Then...

They have the SAME oil only called extreme performance or something for $4 more...just one way mobil is taking an extra $4 from you.

Valvoline 5W30 and Motorcraft FL1A

I like the 5W since it is only for the cold winter startup aspect of the oil. If you live in a cold climate then it is better since it will not be like heavy syrup. We are all fine with the 30 as this is the weight the oil achieves after warm up and standard operating temperature. If you have bad valve seats and your blowing by with blue smoke at a startup (overnight wait), you should use 10W30 or even add a stabilizer to thicken it up. I do not like synthetic on engines that have never used it with high miles. You can try it and if you have no leaks then stick with it. Petroleum oil causes seals to swell. Synthetic can flow right out of a worn seal like water since the seals tend to shrink back. At 112,000 you probably are fine. Anything above 150,000 and you may have more leaks. It is up to you to pick the evil, leaks, or better lubrication.

This is a GREAT website I found years ago. The information here will explain to you that FRAM pretty much stinks. I have used FL1A for years, but I am leaning on WIX 51515 here lately. I had a hard time finding them the last place I lived.
