What kind of tires to get?

I have to get 2 new tires and I was wondering what you guys think are some good tires for a good price. I cant spend more than about $150 each, but less is better. The tires are still stock 16 in. rims. And I would like to find some that handle decent in the rain cause the ones I have now just arent cutting it.
 
I jsut put some General UHP's on the front of mine (not sure if they come in the right 16" size) but I have been happy with them overall so far. They are better than the Goodyear ZR45's I have in the back...
 
Someone please explaine sizing to me. I my last vehicle was my first vehicle and it was a 4x4. So tires sising was easy. 31x10.5R15. Easy as pie to under stand. The ones on my car are currently 225/55R16. I know the R16 is the rim, but the rest? What is the widest I can go and not have to worry about rubbing?

What would be the widest tires I could get away with putting on my stock 16 in rims? They have 225/55 R16's on currently.

Solve for XX but it has to be the same side wall height as a 225/55

if sticking with the same diameter wheel, the calculation is extremely simple... take 225 (225mm) x 55 (.55 ratio) = 123.75 (123.75mm sidewall height)... now we know the height we want... take the 123.75mm and divide by the new width (245mm) and we get... 123.75/245 = 0.505xxxx

so we want as close to 0.505xxxx ratio as we can get... 0.50 is very close...

therefore... 245/50/16 will be a nearly perfect match
