seems like i saw on thumpers web site he offers that option on his thumper heads for an extra 100 bucks or something..........larger valves. you definatly would wanna have the heads ported with them as i don't think they do any good unless the heads have been ported.....sometimes larger valves acutally cause valve shrouding, which is where the larger valve can actually inhibit flow......

nah the 100 bucks is for the HD spring upgrade, not sure what he charges for the bigger valves.RSW was running in the high 12's with stock cam and E7's with bigger valves.

yeah i am consider porting my stockers laying around.

I dont feel like trying to find some gt40, which will probably need to be freshened up and cost more.

I got stockers laying here. I think it would be a good expierence, learn to port, and should be fun.

How much money think it will cost me?
i would plan on replacing all the seals and stuff, new springs (for a Bcam)
get a 3 angle and just try and port them up myself, and gasket match my stock intake to them.

It`s not worth the money putting bigger valves in E7 heads, stock or ported.
Even if they are well ported the gains are marginal and not worth the extra expense of cutting larger seats and buying larger valves.

Total waste of money.

You do NOT need to port the heads to see gains. My heads (intake and exhaust ports) have not been touched. They still have the exhaust bumps and the same small ports they had from the factory. Mine have been cerdi cut, and a valve job as well as 1.84/1.54 valves. If mine have inhibited flow... Id love to go back to stock heads and see if it wont go 12.3s!

PS: I went mid 12s with these heads, STOCK cam, STOCK bottem end, STOCK suspension, on 3.73s with just bolt ons otherwise!

I LOVE when people give information out without prior knowledge. Sure the money is better spent on aftermarket heads, but I wouldnt mind running a car with out of the box iron GT-40s, stock cam and bolt ons, to see how well my "waste of money" E7s stack up!

Maybe I should port them, add some suspension and a decent cam... Who knows what kind of times the car might run?

Your best bet is to talk to a decent machine guy, as Im sure you dont have a valve spring compressor, and the equipment to perform this at home!

LOL.. there are a lot of 12 sec E7 cars out on the street!! Yes there are better heads out there.. but a solid 12 sec car ( like 25th Mustang) is way do able and will within MOST peoples budget.. If they have a budget!! Yet, just because they are ported E7s doesnt mean you cant blow the high dollar heads away, open the hood of your car .. look down at your feet, shuffel a little, and with a embarrased voice say " Yep just stock heads.....!!" LOL
Adding the larger valve we have found that Ford was pretty right on.. 1.85/1.55 size is the best on shrouding issues and piston to valve issues!! Not only in the chambers , but as the valve is extended into the cylinders... Not worth it?? I gues depends on where you are and the cost of the work!! but... Hell yeah they are worth it!! cool??

Just me.............................

Cylinder head porting takes skill, and a first time home job is likely going to provide poor results and you could end up junking the head if you go through a water jacket.

This guy sells a DVD on how to properly port E7 heads, and I`ve heard it`s worth every dollar.I would look into something like this so you can get it right the first time and get great results.

foxfan you better have 3 or 4 sets of stock heads laying around because youre gonna mess up since its your first time. Porting requires a lot of skill and experience, especially when porting heads. There is a whole science behind head porting, doing it yourself will not net you a huge gain. I say pay a couple hundred bucks for a shop to do a good valve job and light porting.

I have done a massive amount of reading on E7 heads. The consensous seems to be that the Mustang guys who can afford better heads think they are junk and the rest of the world thinks they aren't a bad head. If you go to other Ford car forums (like truck, t-bird, old Ford etc) and ask about upgrading their engines one of the first things they always say to do is get the Mustang manifold and heads. Can the E7 be improved upon? Yes. But so can double hump SBC heads.

If you have a budget to work within there is absolutely nothing wrong with E7 heads. Will you make as much horsepower as AFRs? Probably not but not everybody wants to go through the hassle of trying to save up that much money at one time. Not everybody can get together the $1300 plus that it will cost for everything you need to do AFRs. For some people it is easier to get a few hundred bucks here to get bigger valves put in and then a few hundred there for a nice port job.

Some bigger valves, valve job, and maybe some porting will wake up the E7s a good amount. Might even look into milling them a little, and you could have a good head that will run well into the 12s on a street car. Now if you could care less about keeping the "stock" heads, and have that kind of money to drop, aftermarket heads are the way to go...

My whole thing is, for all the guys who claim they are a waste of money... Throw a set of out of the box heads onto a stock motor, add a few bolt ons and lets line up!

You have to start somewhere.. i did mine, and i doubt i did a great job either - but the car runs! We'll see what they'll do in the summer..

What better option does foxfan have, if he has an extra set lying around? Bored on a weeknight, have at it with the grinder for a few hours!

My only advice is to read every tech article you can find, and read them twice over! And do not touch the exhaust port floor like i did on one port, it's a no-no!

well maybe i was wrong......you know alot of people put 194's 160's in as well, maybe those were the ones i'd heard wouldn't do much good with out porting...
i just kinda figured being everyone talks about the porting of them rather than the valves that the valves wouldn't do much without the porting....and valve shrouding can be an issue on some heads, depending on the valve size........maybe not on these heads.........my bad i guess........lol.............

so, being we're on the subject, which would do better, just larger valves, or stock valves and porting??? i'm guessing larger valves and the porting would be the best, which was my original intention of the post.......but now since there's people saying they just have larger valves and no porting whats the story on how much just valves can gain you???

It depends on the valves used, the valve job and the porting along with the mods done to the rest of the engine. There is no one recipe for power. Every engine is different, with the exception of IROC enignes, and as such they will all react differently to different mods. Your best bet (if you're on a budget) is to consult with Tom Moss or Thumper, maybe even Buddy Rawls and see what their experience has shown them. These are people who have worked extensively with stock parts and can help you.

If you're not on a budget just keep throwing money into trying different parts until you get what you're looking for.

I havent had any experience with ported E7s, but my guess would be they both work well (especially together) but its hard to say. The ports are small and working with thm should do a good bit, but then again the valves are small and have room to be played with. It would be interesting to see (a set of ported with stock valves, vs unported with valves) how they stack up!

You can read all the tech articles you want, but imo nothing beats watching it being done right in front of your face and learning.
I haven`t personally seen the Valako race head porting E7 DVD,but others on different forums say it`s gold.

Over an hour long and it gives you everything...measurements,dimensions,where to cut, where not to cut,the proper tools to use, etc.

This guy has ported hundreds of E7 heads and many other heads for offshore power boats and high performance cars and knows what works.

I`m not a salesman for this guy,but if you can find a better resource for porting E7 heads on your own go for it,and let me know if you do.

Thumper's site has an interesting article regarding valve size...

http://www.hunterstyle.com/thumper/valvesize.php

Upgrading the stock heads looks pretty attractive if you don't have $1000+ to drop on aftermaket ones...
