A wigwam would definitely be different from a Best Western! And yeah, I agree... making a big video production out of it might kill some of the fun. You'd have to approach it casually. Stills would be probably be easier and would make a great album when you're done.

Unless you're the rugged individualist-type, you'd probably want to go with someone. I made one of the trips by myself, and driving miles and miles through stretches of nothingness day and night is really a study in loneliness!

Have you guys ever watched that show "Road Trip" on one of the HD channels (HDNet or Discovery HD or something like that)?
They did a route 66 show, and they always use a Mustang V6 convertible.
Whenever I watch it, makes me wanna go drive...

Well....

I just figured that:
1. I'm getting kind of old (39)
2. I haven't gone on a "real" vacation in several years
3 The Mustang is THE car to make this trip in (and I have one!)
4. The Americana and storied history of the great Route 66 is disappearing at an alarming rate. And I WANT TO SEE IT!

Who cares if I spend 5-10 hours a day in the car? Every day...for two weeks? It's the journey of a lifetime...and last time I checked, you only get one of those, and it could end at any minute (as sad as that may be).

In 2008...I will drive from Detroit to the Santa Monica Pier (and back), in my 2007 Mustang GT. I will go at least 5,000 miles on this trip, and shift my own gears (thank you very much!) I will burn much fuel, and hear great sounds doing it. The wind will be in my ears (no vert). The radio will blast crappy country/western music (where applicable). I will stay in run down motels, eat at greasy spoon diners (real ones). I will see open sky for MILES in all directions. No buildings, no telephone wires, no Starbucks. I will take thousands of great photos.

And I will love every minute of it.

And I will have a story to remember and to share with others. (I remember back when I took my Mustang on a drive...)

I've driven Long Island to visit a friend...at least 10+ times. It's 12 hours one way, about 750 miles. I go solo. I get tired after 4 hours...then wake up..then tired at 8 hours...then wake up...etc.

During this time, I sing at the top of my lungs (I never sing in front of ANYONE). I roll the windows down for fresh air. I listen to Classical music. Or disco. I talk to myself. A lot. I think about my life, my future.

This trip down Route 66 will be done during the daylight hours only, and roughly 500 miles a day. Cake, compared to Long Island, NY. I will have plenty of time to hang out for a couple days in the middle of nowhere, or in California...if I choose.

There will be many odd things to see. Deserted Diners, gas stations...things on the side of the road. I will be taking pictures, breathing lots of fresh air...perhaps see a UFO or two.

This will be a journey, and not a destination (like my friend in NY.)

Cool... Sounds like that will be a blast! The Mustang really is the perfect car to make the trip in. Hopefully I'll get to do it at some point.

If you get a picture of a UFO think about the money you could make I think you've inspired me to move across the country and drive my Mustang the whole way across taking extra time to do so. None of this I-10 bullcrap, but Route 66 all the way. Just hope the Navy gives me the chance.

Those look like some great trips. I really loved the trip I took the stang on from here up to vermont and back. We put 1300 miles on it and I loved every minute of it. The new GT's atleast are great two person road cars.

I guess he'll be able to project his arrival at some waypoint - say, San Bernardino, or maybe Lake Elsinore - close enough that some SoCalifornians might be able to meet him and do a 'Cruise' up the Ortega Highway or through the remaining Route 66.

Seems to me one of the Wigwam-shaped motels still in use is just west of San Berdoo. What a place to rendezvous for a through-the-traffic slog to Santa Monica!

Maybe some SoCalifornians might meet him earlier, say in Needles, or maybe Oatman, AZ, where burros roam the streets in search of wild carrots?

By Route 66 Maniac....I assume you mean....ME?

I am leaning towards May-ish for the trip. I'd like to try to drive the desert when it isn't 130 degrees in the afternoon.

I'm trying to get a more pieces of gear for the trip (GPS, tripod, etc.) and do some more calculating and planning.

I'll keep you nuts posted!
