- Ive had 10 foxbody mustangs thats all the research I need. Im not talking 300hp, its 300 REAR WHEEL HORSE POWER. So lets say at 25% drivetrain loss thats 375 at the crank, k thanx. Ever drive a 375HP 5.0 in 6 to 8" of snow? Now tell me you want a 4.10....This car is supposed to be his DD NOT a track car. ANd since its going to spend 99.9% of the time on the STREET its more important for the car to be SAFE, especially for a NEW mustang owner. SO therefore he little to no experience driving squirly RWD cars. Are you guys trying to get him to wreck his car? I used to love racing cars that were all geared out, while theyre wasting time on shifts I walk away. Im not saying hes going to be driving in snow, but even in wet weather, its A LOT easier to lose control of your car . Ive known lots of mustang fanatics over the years and MOST of them have wrecked in bad weather do to loss of control at higher speeds when their cars were geared so steep.
Trust me on this, BUILD THE MOTOR FIRST. Then when you decide that you want a gear you probably wont go as radical as you would when its stock. Since in stock form mustangs are fairly heavy and pretty slow, a gear does help out a lot for a noticeable acceleration improvement. But in the long run how many gear sets do you want to swap out? Personally I hate the smell of gearlube, I only like to do it once and forget about it. Aside from that Im not a 1/4 mile fan, its ok and all but the cars actually suck for driving. No sidewall slicks out back and 3" wide front tires, no thanks I prefer to bang corners at 140 than go in a stright line......1/4 mi. IMO is a no skill race, other than reaction time. I dont care if you all flame me for sayin it, there no skill until your in the 9sec range, then the suspensions so crappy you have to do all you can to keep your bucket going straight. Thats no fun.
