Ok guys you havn't let me down yet so i've got another question.. my brother and i were working on me car and were gonna change the timing but after we got ready to do this he had to leave for the army.. and now my car needs its timing changes.. i was wondering what i needed to change it to or know how i'll know how i want it.. i've got the MSD blaster coil, 8mm wires, and the plugs are gaped to .666.. so if anyone could help that would be great.. i've never done this before so i'm kinda confused..

Ditto! I'd like to tack myself onto this question too if you don't mind DRFT_STNG cuz I have a timing issue and need to know the answer too of what's a good timing advance for an MSD ignition. What I got in my sig is all i got so I'm "engine stock".

Guess we got no takers on the timing advance huh? I guess every subject line of every thread is gonna turn into HOT MUSTANG WOMEN PICS before people get a clue that they hate being ignored. What's up guys?

well stock is 10*....first id verify that it is correctly set at 10*...then just start to advance it a little...go up a couple degrees...take it for a spin and see if it pings...if not go another degree or 2 and see if it pings...of course your going to have to run higher octane fuel to compensate for the advanced timing....mine is at 12* i believe right now...but i didnt try it any higher...some run more...i doubt anything over 16* is going to give you any more power gains....id try and stick at 14* and lower...

you run a lot of gap, i think....
i think Anthony said it well. decide what octane you will run, then advance till you EVER hear pinging. then back it off till the pinging goes away. hotter weather/hotter motor usually requires less timing or more octane (higher octane burns slower, so it does not ignite as quickly).

or you could run higher octane in summer, lower in winter, but you would probably still have to play with the timing anyhow when you change.

and if you have timing set to run with no pinging on, say, 87 octane, there is no advantage to runnin higher octane (if you dont ping on 87). just FYI.

i'll ask my dad (mechanic) in the morning but i think it would be good knowledge to everyone to know how to id verify or check the degree a person's timing is set to. So how do you? (i really want to know)

pull the spout (around the MAF on SN95's).i mark the balancer timing marks with those nice silver markers. hook up timing light. start car (car should be warm). hit trigger and see what it is.
that is the very quick version. dont forget to install the spout back in.

FWIW, i only use a light as a point of reference (so i know what i run). the real test is to be sure that you dont ping. old rule of thumb is that you can advance till you ping, then back it off a little till it does not. i never used a light till i got the stang - you do it by feel. all cars (same model, year, etc) will allow different amounts of timing (depending upon octane, carbon build up, ambient temps, mods for sure, etc), so there is no one number fits all. gotta play with it. my two cents worth. good luck.
