Anything between 15-35 will be fine and portable... I like Craftsman from Sears personally, they have a good 17 gal on sale and it comes with some tools as well..

i've got the horizontal one of those and love it. Its been perfect for what I'm using it for. It'll run a 1/2" impact gun and kicks on in about the same time as my grandmother's ~35 gal. I like it cause its "light enough" to be thrown in the bed of a truck or wheeled around when need be.
That being said, I've read alot of reviews online about Sears compressors and it almost made me NOT buy one. There's alot of negative feedback on SOME of them. I might not have bought it but I had a $175 in gift cards I was ready to burn.
The ratchet that comes with it is ok, no complaints yet. The hose is a little 1/4" i think...but the ratchet (and my gun) say to use a 3/8". The thing is LOUD as hell in a garage if you have the bay door closed. I thought the wrath of god was upon me. I opened the door and it was still loud that i had trouble hearing people yell at me. But like I said, its fine for what I need it for. Enough air to run a 1/2" impact for an average amount of time.
EDIT: just read the reviews for those (it wasnt even on the website when i bought mine) it seems people have similar things to say.
Well, I can't comment on that because I never used one of those Craftsman compressors, just a tiny one they sell that is super portable, lol.. I'm using a Snap On right now, just because I got a great deal on it, its an 80 gal. Not portable at all, lol.
I did have 1 big complaint, however.. I had purchased the Craftsman 3/8 inch hose (i believe 25 ft.). NEVER AGAIN. I've had it for about a year, and it randomly started springing holes! lol, and on top of it.. It is VERY stiff and hard to round up when youre done with it, so I would probably get a different hose with it.
just came picked it up from sears, crappy outside today so i cant really play with it. I read that hp is important but cfm and max psi plays just as much as a role.
had it for 10 minutes out of the box, let the cursing begin. Friggin universal quick connect body is jammed in the disconnect position, gave up 20 minutes ago.
