i was looking to day to get myself some speakers to go in the package tray of my 68 hardtop, only to find out there's 3 different sizes...5x7", 6x8", and 7x9"...now not knowing anything about stereos except what a good one sounds like...what are you guys using? do 6x9's fit?
what size speakers??

i have a 67 coupe with 6x9's in the tray. They sound very nice but they dont fit exactly in the existing holes in the structure, you will have to do a little "massaging" to get the to sit down right.
I have 6x9s but mounted them a little different. The actual speaker housing sites under the metal tray. That way I didn't have to worry about enlarging the hole to match the speaker. They are held in place by the bolts that go down through the speaker grille, package tray (board), package tray (metal), speaker housing, then the lock washers and nuts.

There are several companies that offer the correct sizes to fit the earlier cars, 5x7 / 6x8 / etc... even the odd-ball front one that is like 3x10... all you have to do is go to a good stereo shop, or go search the companies web-sites like rockford, infinity, kenwood, etc... who-ever you like, most all of them make speakers to fit. AND even if they dont, you can get a component set (seperate mid and high that come as a matched pair type deal....) and you just cut some sheet metal to fit the hole that you have, then mount the components on the sheet metal plate. Either way you'll have a system that fits well.
