What starter to you guys prefer?

Whats a nice replacement starter? Mine is the smaller type and I have no idea on the brand, but after the car has been running for awhile and it gets warm it's real draggy and I know before long it will bite the dust, whats a reasonable replacement aftermarket?

Sounds like the starter is heat soaked, try wrapping it with a heat shield.

I bought a high torque mini unit to convert mine over from the stock honkin one. I don't recall the brand but I got it from a parts seller on ebay. It works great. I've had no issues with it at all.

I got the Ford Racing starter. It works good, and is much lighter.

I got the PA Performance high torque mini starter and it kicks ass.

I got the smaller type from AZ just because I got 30% off and a LLT.
Still works and it got a lot of use from when I used to stall the car when I was learning how to drive stick.

If the starter on my '86 ever craps out, I plan on investing in one of the smaller-body (high-torque) starters that they put on the '90+ models. Nothing fancy, just the parts-store version with a lifetime warranty. I just need to read up on the how-to portion as far as wiring the bugger a little differently, but as I remember it, it's not terribly complicated, at all.

I'm actually kind of looking forward to the day when my starter takes a dump. That thing is freakin' LOUD when it cranks over.
