What supercharger to get?

Im in the process of buying a 93 GT convertible...I want to make it a fun car to drive...not a full out race car..I was thinking of the 6 psi Powerdyne...but it seems like no one likes it...?...I had 1 on my 97 LT1 it was fine....Im not going to go crazy with this GT..Mild bolt ons...It has an Off road H-pipe and a Flowmaster cat back on it already...Other then that its completely stock oh 3.08's and its an auto to....I was thinking i want it to run in the low 13's maybe squeak out a 12.99999...lol. Am i being realistic with this goal or am i way off....Thanks for any help....:nice:
 
That isnt a S trim. Its a SC trim which is a updated model of the older A trim, not even close to the same blower. Anyways...Go with a Novi 1000, nice little blower that has alot of potential and will meet your goals for sure. This is coming from someone who has actually owned Vortech and Powerdyne btw, not a hear say type of thing.

What boost Novi should i run...Were is the best place to buy one?

Anyways...Go with a Novi 1000, nice little blower that has alot of potential and will meet your goals for sure. Yeah, my bad. I looked it up wrong. FWIW, this is my second vortech. First one I left on the car when I sold it. Never had a problem. Also, a sc trim still should get him to his goal. Novi 1k is a great blower too. Can't go wrong with either.

Thanks Guys...say i want to leave the stock long block but put on a good lower and upper Intake better TB...and the car already has An off road H-pipe and Flowmaster cat back...will that help in the HP level?....Ive only had one superchaged car it was an 97 LT1 Trans AM with a powerdyne 6 psi kit...thats why i asked about that blower That car with stage 1 heads.stock bottom end,stock cam,stock intake..with headers and exhaust made 393 rwhp....I thought the powerdyne was good...Most of my car ive used Nitrous..i just wanted a blower again...:D
 
Speaking from an experienced member who drives a heavy car with an automatic transmission.....

I'll add another vote here for the Kenne Bell. If making a heavy car like a convertible get up and move is what you're after and you're not willing to sacrifice your 3.08 rear end ratio or AOD to do it, nothing beats the low end torque production of a Positive Displacement blower.

Centrifugal blowers are great for making horsepower, but unless you're willing to strip weight, or sacrifice fuel economy (swapping out your rear end gears and adding a higher stall converter) you'll want to stick with a blower that makes a boat load of torque off idle, with a more linear power band like the Kenne Bell.

Bottom line....you won't be disappointed with the Kenne Bell, where you might be with any of the current centrifugals on the market!

...one other thing to note. If you're planning to upgrade the intake manifold anyway, keep in mind that you'll only need to upgrade the lower intake with the Kenne Bell.
 
For a 5.0L go with a Vortec V2 supercharger and run a minimal 8lbs of boost. If you go with a 6lb kit, you WILL want more.

Kenne Bells are a better choice for 99-04/05-09 Mustang 4.6L 2V's and 3V's. They are also a good choice for 03-04 Cobra's and 07-08 Shelby GT500's.

Kenne Bells don't make the kind of power on 5.0L's and early 4.6L motors as they do on the Mustangs mentioned above. Kenne Bells also generate more heat than Centrificals so more boost from a KB won't be as efficient as more boost from a centrificul.

Unless he wants to keep his foot into it all the time, he's not going to get the power and drivability out of the Centrifugal set up he would out of the Kenne Bell.

No, it doesn't make the kind of upper RPM, or peek power levels as most of the Centrifugals mentioned (you can thank the lack of intercooler for that) but it will provide more bang for the buck under the power curve and better daily drivability than any of them will. Especially considering the weight of the car and his current drive train set up.

If this was a coupe, or even a hatch back with 3.73-4.30 rear end gears and a built AOD with a 3,400RPM stall converter, I would side with you guys in a heart beat. But as it sits, he's going to want to optimize toque production the best he can. And that’s not something he'll be able to do in the cars current state with any of the Centrifugals on the market!
 
True. I can see that. I just think that a 5.0L with any centrifi or roots blower isn't an all out race car, so I just recommended what I see every person at the track has.
 
I'd like to have a kenne Bell for my project in the future. I'd like to keep the stock longblock (save for a valve upgrade in my stock e7's) I want the stop light to stoplight power, and have some fun on the street. Not street racing, just something "fun" if that makes any sence :shrug:
 
When i say i dont want a full out race i mean i dont want to build a 9-10-11 second car..I would be happy with a High12 to very low 13 seconds so can i get there with either a vortech or a paxton..or am i going at it the wrong way..I dont want to tear into the motor unless i have too...So thats why i was thinking a supercharger...

That's what I figured. High 12's to low 13's is possible, but you would need a Vortec with more than 8lbs of boost. My friends 95GT with a built AODE, stock engine, 8lb Vortec V-1 ran 13.71@106MPH. Yes, there is room for improvement on his car, but this was on street tires, stock converter, no line lock etc.... His car is an example of a fun street car. It's fast on the street no doubt and runs better times than stock.

To get a stokc motored 302 into the 12's with just a blower and stock suspension etc....I would get at least 10lbs with a good tune.

If you have an AOD, I would suggest a shift kit, full manual valve body to avoid that crappy 4,700 RPM 2-3 shift and transmission cooler right off the bat. Then as funds permit, get a stall converter. Nothing crazy, 2.800-3,000.

You'll be able to run high-12's/low-13's with any of the example above. The question is, is that do you want to be into the throttle all of the time in order to feel the performance, or are you wanting the car to run with big block torque all of the time, while still maintaining small block fuel economy. Pullied for 8psi, you're not going to start making boost until about 3,000-3,200RPM and probably wont see full boost until the 4,500RPM range. Positive displacement blower start making boost almost right off idle and if you hit it hard, you'll see full boost by a little over 2,000RPM. That's big block torque and horsepower you’ll feel all the time my friend!!!

Install wise, the Kenne Bell would be the simplest of the bunch, since the compressor on its own is self contained (meaning no drilling the oil pan) and its physical installation itself is essentially like replacing your upper intake

My converter stalls in that range currently and to be honest its still way too low. If he didn't have the added weight, or the 3.08 gears it wouldn't be so bad, but he's going to want something in at least the 3,400RPM range if he wants to see a difference in his time slips. Thats assuming of course he's even going to run it at the track? :shrug:
