What the heck is a oil separator?

I have a 88 LX convertible and I bought the oil breather filter for it because I doubt it has ever been replaced. But my Chilton book says nothing about the oil breather filter but the PCV valve is hooked up to an oil separator. Is that the same thing? they look different but the new PCV valve looked different than the original. So anyway, can you help me?

The oil separator is supposed to help keep most of the oil out of the PCV system, although I don't think it does that great of a job. Fuel injected 2.3's don't have open oil breathers like older engines do, they just have a closed PCV system.

Well can you replace the oil separator? I can't find a part number for it.

What I bought is also called a cranckcase breather.

Well, you can replace it, but it probably doesn't really need it. Also you have to take off the lower intake to get at it which would be a pain in the ass.

Can you get new hoses for the breather, specifically the one from the breather to the PCV valve? The one that was on my motor is all cracked and hardened.

Beats me...the hoses on my cars were like that too, but I never replaced em, and I don't have the pcv hooked up on my new engine.

I guess if you really wanted to you could make one for it. Just get an oil seperator for a air compressor and a 3/8 elbow. This will work ten times better than what the 2.3's came with. Although you will have to empty it every once and a while. I had to do this to my Harley truck but it sucks way more oil into the intake system than a 2.3 does. This causes huge problems since the intercooler sets under the intake manifold and starts cloging up.
