what type of tranny??

i just bought a 88 mustang GT 5 speed. with the current setup its running about 410hp. the last owner said it keeps tearing up the T-5 transmissions. what would be the best performance transmission upgrade for a stang running that much HP? its going to be a daily driver and i dont wanna waste money on a transmission my car is going to eat up.

If your willing to change clutches and bell housing look at a Tremec TKO600.

TKO 600 would be ideal but if you are on a budget, look into the g-force upgrades. You can maintain your clutch, bellhousing and xmember and it upgrades the internals.

yeah, im not too worried about the clutch because it needs to be replaced anyways. how much do you think im looking to spend with the 2. clutch and tranny. ?

where can i purchase the TKO 600, and clutch at a reasonable price? and how much should expect to pay?

well i just researched the G-force a little bit, and it seems to be the way im gonna go. simply because my car is modded at 410hp and im not going to go any further than 450hp. now, what clutch would you recommend? centerforce?

Plan for about 2-2.5k maybe less depending on how resourceful you are. I suggest a Centerforce Dual Friction. Check out http://www.ddperformance.com/ to get idea of the price. You can modify your current xmember and probably find a bellhousing and yoke on ebay to keep the price down.

thanks for the link 428. if i opt to just upgrade my t-5 i shouldnt have to change out the bell housing and cross member though right? if i go centerforce dual friction do i need to alter anything else?

Check out http://www.g-forcetransmissions.com/ You should be able to maintain your xmember and bell housing. If you are going centerforce get a 26 spline. I don't believe you need anything else but check out the website just to be sure.

Personally, i would go with a TKO600, only because i've seen the behind numerous set-ups and they have held up fine. G-force is much less used so there is generally less proof. Thats not saying it's not a great transmission, i just think TKO is tried and true and you can't go wrong.

Personally I would go with the Tremec TKO600....

You do not want the straight cut gear on a street car.

The G force does not save you all that much money over a TKO. By the time you buy the upgraded shaft, and pay for gear installation the price gap is closed considerdbly. And if you don't have them do it, expect to pay someone else $350 to do the labor on the trans rebuild.

IMO got with a TKO 500. Expect to shell out around $2300 by the time it's done with clutch, maybe a few more bucks.
Reason i say 500, is because i'm not a big fan of the 600's gear ratio options. I speak from experience on that.

In fact, i just looked at the g force page, they want 2,000 for a built g force used core, or $1500 for parts and $250 for labor.
That's the cost of the tremec, you'll just have to buy a new bellhousing and yoke.

I wouldn't mind having a g force setup, but i would mind paying 2 grand to get it.

Like said above, its not that big of a difference. I would just go with the tko. You deffinetly don't want straight cut or dog ring on a street car, those are made for racing.

I think the TKO600 with a tall rear gear ration is the best way to go. The Gforce doesn't save you much unless you do all the work yourself and still its only about half the price of a new setup with a better transmission built for more abuse. Even the TKO500 would be a good choice if you like the similar gearing to the T5. I find I run through 1st and 2nd too quick and 3rd is a dog. The 600 evens that out a bit... with 400 hp you shouldn't have a problem.

I paid $2,150 for my complete G-Force Tranny Setup. I didnt have to purchase a new shifter or do anything. Pull out the old, put in the new! It's that easy. I love mine and havent heard of one breaking yet, even cars running 9's havent broken them yet. Good up to 650hp, maybe even more?
