What would happen if there was no more Ford?

I don't know if this has been discussed or not but lets say the big 3 went under and closed up shop. How would that affect all the cars that are out there? What would we do for OEM parts? Would our parts say made in China on the back of them? What about dealer service? Its quite the interesting scenario. I'm sure someday some new US car manufactures would start up. I can see it now, the 2020 Smith Mustang!

I doubt ford will go under. Ford has alreads stated that they can survive till november of next year because they took out a loan when they saw the economy take a downturn. GM on the other hand is really hurting. I dont think any of the big three will go away but GM will probably file chapter 11.

In my opinion, if Ford went under, it would be the end of a company that is a piece of the fabric of America itself. I feel the same way for GM and Chrysler. These three companies are like Baseball and apple pie to me. My grandfather worked for ford all his career on the dealership end, and I grew up wearing Ford hats and shirts. Its a part of me too.

I understand that these companies have made questionable choices along the line, but they also gave this country what it wanted and asked for so I can't blame them completely. America loved the big cars and trucks and the big three delivered. Small, fuel efficient vehicles just weren't at the front of their minds because no one in North America was truly buying/asking for them like the other models.

I'm really not savvy on the UAW so I try to stay out of that portion. I believe both sides have caused this mess. Though the potential job impact of the three going under would be HUGE. Chapter 11 would help them restructure, but they wouldn't be able to get financing to get back on their feet afterward...and who would buy a vehicle from a bankrupt car company after it comes back? And this isn't like the airlines, etc. Those are companies that provide a service one time, etc. Not one that produces a consumer product that people keep and depend on for years. Chapter 11 spells disaster as well.

Its my opinion that these companies ARE America. They have been a part of the growth of this country (good and bad) and deserve at least a fair glance by the government. I sure hope that America doesn't decide to shun companies that were a part and are still a part of the heart of this country. If they all go...what MAJOR manufacturing would America have left? We would be even closer to a completely consumer based economy than we already are.

a severe depression that would last a minimum of 5 years. my guess would be at least a decade.

The Govt won't allow Ford or GM to go under, as it'll cause approximately 3M people to lose their jobs; there are about 10 jobs to every 1 directly tied into the automotive industry.

hard to say, should they or shouldn't they go under?

Do we want a POS Ford, GM, and crysler, to continue to produce sub par vehicles? Or should they file for bankruptcy, reorganize and restructure, and be more competitive with honda, bmw, and toyota? How long does this last, how much more are we going to have to give them to bail them out? What about current labor restrictions?

What about all those jobs, and the immediate affect on the economy?

It's just hard to say, I would guess that none of us really know the best option. Both options are don't look to good.

Scott, I agree with most of what you say. But if you look at the insane loans that these companies have been handed, the debt that they have incurred, and their reluctance to learn from the past, and the rediculous unions, it just is hard to understand. I sat and listened to the congressional hearing today for a few hours, and it is just insane how the idiotic GM rep or CEO defended the big 3 in their expansion to China to be competitive and the need to build new plants over there. They want to expand and compete in new markets, all of them, and can't even keep up in their current markets. Hearing that, and buying a GM car last night, didn't sit too well with me this morning. If anybody thinks they are really any different from one another, I think they are wrong.

I completely agree that these companies, are the fabric of America. I know these companies not only generated great wealth for the American Economy, but were the reason we won WWII.

Just a tough decision.

If they get rid of all the union contracts they can actually be profitable. At the current time there are more people that are getting full pay in retirement from GM than there are actual employees at GM.

Yes some people love the unions. They are wayyy overpaid for the job they do though. The import car makers don't put up or deal with the union type **** at all and that's one of the big reasons they are not hurting at all.

In the hearings that have been going on with the bigs 3 CEO's the GM CEO stated that the tightening of the credit market and the beginnings of a recession are why the american automakers are hurting and need to be bailed out. Well, none of the import companies have their hands out or even need to. Geee I wonder why that is. I'd love to get paid $60 an hour to stand there and put wheels on a car all day. That's ****in' gravy.
