What would you do if it was only $450 to upgrade to a 347???

I have a new 306 in a fresh machined block but the pistons will not agree with the TW heads and don't have the compression I want either. So I found some dome pistons that are made for TW heads that will cost about $450 all togeather. A 347 rotating assembly would only cost about $450 more. Of course this would require a new flywheel and balancer so make that about $700 more really. If I don't upgrade now, I am afraid I will kick myself later. Would the HP to $$ ratio be there?

You can balance a 347 to 50oz. I'm told its not ideal, but will work. Forget a 306 dude since its not much more for 41 more cubes. Maybe you could find an aluminum 28oz flywheel and balancer used online?

I can tell you KNOW the right answer, but you wanna hear it from us too.

Yeah, I know the answer, just trying to get some peer pressure.

I don't know, I was cool with a mild setup before I went to the F-body shootout which the track so conviently scheduled the Mercedes Shootout the same day because it had been rained out the week before. I had to watch F-bodies on slicks get the smack put down on them by Benz's that launched from idle and you couldn't even hear. Here was this one beefed up E55 AMG running 11.23 at 126mph!!! Oh and the comments made by the Benz snobs made me just wish so hard I had somthing to "represent". That is when I decided to go all out.

Build a good foundation now and you can always put better parts on top of it down the road. Even if you only use mild 302 parts now.

I hear ya loud and clear. I too when I go to the track and see all this fast sh it, wanna make mine fast too. My combo should be capable of around 120mph. I probably won't think its fast lol.

I hear ya, but there's always gonna be something/someone faster. I know you know that. If you have the $700, go for it. If not, well, I guess don't stress over it. You'll be mad at times either way: You'll be mad if you don't do it because of "what it could be" and you'll be mad if you do it because of "what it isn't" when you get beat by someone else. You'll also have happy times either way when you're in a good running, nice sounding, tire burning, 120mph trapping beast. More or less, you'll have the same emotions/problems you have now, just bumped up a little bit.

Just wanted to make sure our feet are all still firmly planted on the ground :nice:

Ok, so I start looking at 347 options and then I notice that building a 408 wouldn't cost a whole lot more, but after the price of the oil pan, headers, as well as other things, it would be very expensive. I am really considering going carb as well. I don't know when this project will ever be done. I have learned those who sacrifice and go without for a while to get things done right always have more success. It just kills me sometimes because I spend a lot of money on this thing that takes up space in the garage sitting on jackstands. The only thing that keeps me going is that fact that it is continuiously changing into what I am aiming for. I am close to $2500 in the hole, now back closer to $3500 in the hole if I do a stroker. Swapping to carb I'll probally break even. Oh, and I just spent $1800 with snap-on. I guess it's even harder to get something back togeather when it isn't a first priority. Maby it will be done in time for my mid-life crisis.

Just face it, no ones ever happy with their horsepower (relatively speaking). You buy a relatively stock 5.0 and the 225 HP and 300 TQ makes you smile at first. Then a few weeks or months later when thats out of your system you want more. And more. And more. Its like any other addiction. HP is like money. Having enough to get buy is good. Having a little extra is great. Having so much you dont know what to do with it all... thats where you wanna be. :D
