what year did odb come in the stang?

I'm thinking about buying an obd reader. I have some questions tho. Besides the basics like what brand. what should i buy, what should i avoid?

I have a 89 stang, a 94 mazda protoge that i'm about to dump, and a 97 golf thats giving me greif. My girl also has a 99 Honda accord (don't laugh).

So i'm looking into something that can be used on most of the cars. the honda, stang, and golf.

any info can help me. thanks guys!

not going to happen, OBDI readers are brand specific.
The 97 and 99 are OBDII and can be read with any OBDII scanner.

For those who are intimidated by all the wires & connections, see http://www.actron.com/product_detail.php?pid=16153 for what a typical hand scanner looks like. Normal retail price is about $30 or so at AutoZone or Wal-Mart.

Or for a nicer scanner see http://www.midwayautosupply.com/pc-7208-90-equus-digital-ford-code-reader-3145.aspx – It has a 3 digit LCD display so that you don’t have to count flashes or beeps.. Cost is $30.

the 5.0s never ran OBD, that started with the 4.6s in 96 like stated above.

I guess its more brand specific before obdII like stykthyn said. but they still have it. a cave man version of it.

volkswagons are the most hateful car in the world for a general mechanic. you won't find a useful tool for diagnostics for it. take it back to the nazi's when it breaks. dealer only software.

From reading that, i guess 1996 was the year OBDII became mandatory for all cars.

The 1994 V6 Mustang was the first to come with OBDII in the Mustang line.

Unsure if any of the 5.0's were equipped with OBD. It definitely wasn't OBDII though although nothing made mention of the 5.0 being OBD1 or 1.5 compatible.

My Understanding was 86-95 5.0's were EEC-IV

For the 94-95 aspect (for future searchers):

The V6's indeed were OBD-II starting in 94. The V8's were OBD-I through 95. The 94-95's have both diagnostic connectors in them but only the underhood (OBD-I) connector does anything. It's on the passenger side (unlike a fox III's being on the driver side).

The 94-95 V8's are indeed EEC-IV like Mike said. However, they have a superior processor and diagnostics (and 3 digit codes). They can also run PIDs.

Jrichker's synopsis is right on the money. Matter of fact, some years back when I was in the market for a scanner (not reader), he kindly replied to my PM and mentioned what he used. I followed his advice and was very happy.

OBD = On-board diagnostics

OBDI/OBDII doesn't refer to a specific type of computer. It's a generic term referring to the types of diagnostic data a computer is able to output.
