what years did the flywheels change on the 5.0l and the 5.8l and to what imbalance weights? being told different things from people, getting all confused, not willing to chance it. also whats the difference in the 10, 10.5, could i still use the same starter and housing?

1981 I beleive is when they went 50 oz.

Also, there was a minor change in 1986 when they went 10.5". Unsure what it was however.

I have 2 flywheels here with the P/N E1 Cast into it, with a 2nd part number E6 stamped into it. Both came from 87+ Mustangs

heres the thing. i had a flywheel & clutch from a 85' 302ho on my 84' 351w with a t5, the setup worked great, but swapped it back onto the 5.0 to install in a chevy s10 , and now need to buy a flywheel and clutch for my 5.8. for the sake of price, im looking to buy one for a 5.0 (knowing its compatible with the 5.8) for the 5.8. i only recently relized there are different sizes, imbalance weights, and teeth within the different years (guess i got lucky with the miss matching). what i understood with my research was, the 85'earlier had 28oz weights 10" clutch 157spline ring gear(so im assuming the 5.8 needs a 28oz), and the 86' later has 50oz weights and a 10.5"clutch 157spline ring gear (PLEASE correct me if im wrong) soooo.... my question is: would it work with the 351w to to get a 86 or later flywheel with a bolt on "28oz" weight and a 10.5" clutch (the bigger the clutch, the better, right?)and still use the same bellhousing and starter that i had with the 85" setup? if not, what would work, or be recommended?

I beleive the 28oz imbalance was far earlier than 1985. I want to say 80/81 was the transition year. I'm not sure though. I'd wait til someone a little more knowledgable chimes in

sounds good to me, just alittle cunfused why the years are seperated when wanting to buy one for 1979-85 and 1986-95, but getting alittle impatent so almost willing to chance it and buying a 86 and later w/50oz. with a 10.5" clutch 157 tooth for my 351. i have an auto flex plate with 164 tooth (wasnt sure what it was for) but wont fit in the housing of the t5, must have different housings from 5.0-5.8.

i think i FINALLY have it figured out the differences in the 5.0l flywheels. the 1963-80 have 157 tooth, 10" clutch, 28oz weight. the 1981-85 have 157 tooth, 10" clutch, 50oz weight. the 1986-95 have 157 tooth, 10.5" clutch, 50oz weight. now i just need to figure out the differences for 351w flywheels, all i know now is they have 164 tooth, not sure what years change what. thanks for help mustang5l5 and clearing things up.

The 351W did not change imbalance weight. It was 28.2 oz from '69 through '95.
