The shop thats working on my car told me that i have 289 heads that were manufactured in california. I guess he thought that that made them special or something. The only thing i know about cali cars being different is smog equipment. With cali heads, is the compression ratio different or something? Or is this guy just a wacko?

The only difference the California heads had was as you thought, the smog passages. They were not made in California. They're only worth more to someone who's restoring a California smog equipped car. Otherwise, they're boat anchors.

They also each exert the same force needed to anchor your favorite boat   :D But seriously, although I haven't examined a set, I would assume that they would also have the same or similar, EGR "bump" in the exhaust port that the 5.0 heads have, that restrict the flow. A little work with a die grinder would fix that.

actually, you will know they are true Cali heads if they have a small metal tube beside each spark plug hole. It is a restriction - I think they are worse than non-air-injection heads of the same vintage.

But they are every bit the equal in holding barn doors!
