whats mods give you the ability to rev higher?

Also what if i get alot of mods and my 5.0 can rev higher, will my AOD shift at the old points?? I dont want it to shift when i still have some good powerband left in that gear.

Also, if i was to swap out stock for an explorer upper and lower, is it a simple bolt on situation? Or are there some small modifications?

You will need a stronger valvetrain with a different set of heads and cam/intake and the supporting products (exhaust/maf/tb/etc) to get it to want to rev higher. Personally I wouldn't want to rev a stock bottom end past 6500rpm regardless without getting some lightweight internals and a stouter build to it with a good balance.

Your AOD would still shift at the same points I believe...you would need a shift kit to raise the shift points.

An ignition kit (MSD makes them) makes it where you can raise and lower your rev-limiter but even without some higher breathing mods you don't really need to rev much past the factory 6200rpm rev-limiter in my opinion...

Good advice. I know you mentioned a stronger valvetrain but I would like to be more specific and mention valve springs. A lot of people overlook their springs and then wonder why their motors seem to crap out around 5k RPM's when they have a cam that says its good to 6k. Usually the springs are weak.
PS I like to keep my rev-limiter set a 6k. Just to be safe. (Stock bottom end)

Rod bolts are one of the most important. The stock rod bolts are tiny. Any decent connecting rods will come with better sized rod bolts.

With that said, there is no point to rev the motor if you are not making power that high so you need a cam that actually makes power and some heads that flow alot better. Any Aluminum head will have the better valve train that has already been mentioned.

Actually (for example) the AFR 165's come with some weak springs respectively and need to be upgraded...I had to get mine upgraded and my powerband is from 2600-5600rpm...

By the time you get your motor to rev higher.....the ol wimpy AOD will need quite a bit of work......so worry about it last.

A shift kit I believe is to firm up the shifts and make them faster/smoother; to increase shift points to a higher RPM, you'd want a higher stall convertor.

valvetrain, camshaft, induction.

then, a converter with anti baloon plates, as the stocker baloons at ~ 5300 rpm.

and, a manual valve body, cuz even with a wide ratio kit, and a high rpm governer in the aod, it wont give ya more than about 6200 on the 10-2, and about 5300 on the 2-3.
