What's needed for "new" Cobra intake?

Speaking as someone that bought one last year and is replacing it this year, I'd recommend to stay away. The build quality and the afore mentioned issues make it a lousy buy, unless you can find one of the original ones. If I knew then what I know now, I would have held out for a GT-40 or just gone with an Edlebrock to begin with.

Go with the Edelbrock Billy. :nice: Just the regular Performer will be good. I went 105 mph with just the intake and your MAF and pulleys, x-pipe and gears. This was with stock injectors and stock headers. :nice:

That bad huh? That really bites!

Isn't there on bolt on the Edelbrock that is a total btch to get to?
I know the GT-40 is around 700, off the top of my head I'm thinking the Edelbrock is 500? I gotta check the price.

The GT-40 is a great looking intake, plus it is Ford with exceptional power making on the dyno. It makes torque down low and at the higher RPM's. The Edelbrock I can't remember. Any comments?

I would do a search on the other intakes plenty of good reading and found alot of good info. I aslo did a search on the new cobra intake and read about the problems and decided against the pruchase, in the end I did some research on the Tom Moss website and have decided to go this route and it looks like it will come out much cheaper and the ported stock lower he does will flow has much as the cobra, I aslo plan a 95 cobra maf, ford racing 65mm TB and EGR spacer and port matching the spacer to the upper intake. I only have mild mods, stock cam and heads right now but this seems like a solid option for a stock or mild moded motor.

It's only 1 bolt on the inside of the intake that is somewhat hard to get to, it's not really that bad though. You have the side plate off of the upper and I dropped the bolt down into the hole with a pair of needle nose pliers and tightened it up with a regular box wrench. Not too hard if you ask me. Most people don't even put it in.

Both the GT-40 and Edlebrock Performer will be very similar in numbers. You can't go wrong with either in my book. :nice:

I'm using a T-Moss intake rite now. It's a great intake for the money. But I'm looking to step up.

Cool. I'm gonna see if I can get a deal somewhere.

Thanks for the info guys!:nice:

Unfortuately, the GT-40 isn't available new anymore. My wife found one new in the box on the local Craigslist for $400 and bought it for me for christmas. I'll be sending it to Tom Moss in the next couple of weeks and let him do his magic on it before I install it.

Alternatively, you can still pick up original Cobras on eBay for $350-ish. The easiest way to tell the old from the new is the new Chinese-made ones have a "Ford Racing" emblem near the throttle body. I wouldn't hesitate to use an original Cobra. :flag:

HUH! The GT-40's are still in the Summit catalog for 699.00

400 beans is a STEAL!! :nice: Sending it to T-Moss will is a nice touch. ;) I wish that new BBK was a bit more stable because I love the looks of it. The only reason I wanted a Cobra was because of the price. Now with new light shed on the subject I most likely won't be getting one.

You must have an OLD Summit Catalog as I havent seen the GT40 Intake on the Market in over a Year. $400 is an absolute Steal for an New Original Tubular GT40 Intake!!!

The gt40 intake is in every summit book they sent me to this date? I also own one of "those" cobra intakes, i havent installed it yet but the baffle on it is the same one thats on the factory one so i dont see how it would make any difference?

I just looked in my new summit catolog wich is good until feb of 2008 and it's not listed and I checked thier website and couldn't find anything. I looked at all the intakes and searched GT40, GT40 intake and Ford GT40 nothing. do you have a part# for it in your catolog so i can look it up.

I just threw out my last issue while cleaning, pretty sure it was in there.
However, I DO take Wythors word for it. (GT-40 being discontinued) I was merely pointing out that summit still had them. Maybe they kept them listed till they exhausted there stock? Perhaps, let's not make this a debate on who has seen them in summits and who hasn't seen them.
It is a "great" intake for the 5.0, but 5.0's are aging and I'm sure the demand for these intakes has subsided.

Thanks for the reply's everyone. :nice:

The GT-40 is no longer manufactured because it was expensive to manufacture. If you see it in a Summit cataloge, get a new cataloge, yours is too old. If you want one, your going to have to get it used. It will cost you between $400-$600. I got mine off NMRA classifieds for $400(I went with GT-40 for the added looks). But you can save youself some money: get an Explorer intake. The Explorer was modeled after the Cobra, and the Cobra was modeled after the GT-40. They all put out vertually the same #'s +/- 1-2 hp and torque. And the Explorer if purchased right will cost you about $150-$225 for an upper and lower. The Explorer also doesn't have any quality issues like the new Cobra intakes that are now manufactured in China.

The GT40 Intakes havent been in any Summit Catalogs I have recieved for a long time!

I like my original 94 Cobra intake alot, that combined with upgrading the exhaust woke my car up big time. I almost went with the Ford racing Cobra intake but I decided to look around for a real Cobra intake becuase I didn't want to use an elbow adapter and I have heard the originals are much better quality. Depending on the year of your car you might be better off going with an explorer intake just so you want have to deal with the made in China version.

Looks like factory five racing has them brand new
