what is the advantage of changing out from the H-pipe back on an exhaust (cat-back) rather than just changing out just the mufflers? The pipe that extented from the H-pipe to muffler would be the same diameter in an aftermarket exhaust correct? And, from what i have seen the pipe is bent the same way as the stock pipe.

no advantage at all. That's why you only see maybe 2 companies even making a complete tailpipe kit. Just do the axleback only and it's perfectly fine

I thought some cat-back kits did re-route the exhaust? So, there really is no measurable difference between the cat-back and axle-back kits?

i think the bassani comes with cat-back. they claim that they eliminated 4 bends or something. the stock pipes also have a flat spot near the axle. they flattened it out for clearance. i believe that the bassani does not have this. (i dont have the bassani) they would not be a big gain, but you would pay $$$ for the extra pipes, then extra for the additional size/weight when shipping it.

aside from what bigcat said, theres really no difference in changing the h pipe from stock, the difference comes if you buy an o/r h or x or ones with high flow cats. the cats is where you would really see the difference. and i believ teh companies that sell "catbacks" over just axle backs are magnaflow, borla and mac, theyre the only ones i have seen that include the over axle pipe(the ones from the stock h back to the mufflers)

I thought that the idea of hi-flow cats was the best route to take since on some cars no back pressure at all can hurt the performance as well. Something to do with the piping itself... curvature, internal resistance to flow... that kinda thing. I too am looking for a set of hi-flows for two purposes. The first for performance and sound and the second to releive some of the heat that builds up in the tranny tunnel right above the stack cats. It can get rather hot during the summer months on long drives.

I think that an H-pipe would retain the classic muscle car sound, more so than an X-pipe. Does anyone know of a manufacturer with an H-pipe with hi-flows? I do beleive that MAC has a Prochamber with hi-flows.

Sorry to somewhat high jack this post but how big of a sound change would I see if I replaced the stock H with say a non catted JBA H? And would the JBA slip right in? the rest of the stock system?

if you switched to a non catted h you would have a really loud, hollow sounding exhaust! probably the best sound you can get, btu from what i hear the jba h can only be used with their headers. i think mac's prochamber would give that old school sound too.

Thats what I thought! I was just wondering if anyone has done it.... Its kind of a cheap way to get a good sound until I can go for the full exhaust system
