ok...my friend owns a 1972 mustang mach 1 with the 351 4v cobra jet in it. its bone stock his knowledge i guess and he says it has traction bars. what i am curious about is the top speed. he says he was driving around and he got it up to 150mph next to his car and supposedly he had still a lot of fun room left in the rpm range. i know that all those cars are quick in the 1/4 mile time and have the power to back it up but i am just unsure of them going having a high top end speed. if you guys have any information please help me out!!! thanks!

Well it is unlikely, but theorically....a motor pulling 5k rpms with a 26 inch talll tire and a 2.8 rear end would be going 136 MPH with a 1:1 tranny final drive ratio....180 ish at 7k rpms.

This does not account for drag, slippage, etc....

However it is far more likely he changed rear ratios and some point and never fixed his speed ..... hell my 65 says I am doing 80 before I even get off my driveway ...also stock speedos don't go to 150....at least none that I have ever seen.

he says his car was completely stock..he also mentioned that there were 4 different gear choices ford offered on his car and he is not sure of the gearing but he knows its stock. he was driving next to one his friends whose speedo goes high and he said that his friend told him they were going 150 or whatever. it just doesnt seem to make sense that he can go that fast with the stock gearing.

It makes perfect sense...a 2.8 gear gives the car a much higher top speed than a 4.11 gear. However, I think the friend that told him how fast they were going was full off it.

considering the magazine testers only ever got something like 130 out of any mustang untill the late 80's(except for a few special ones like race prepped boss 302's), i am also going to have to call Bravo Sierra.
