What's "Worse" for Auto Tranny's..

neuratl doprring is noty like letting a 9 -10.5" clutch out all at once. your clutch packs MAY be able to take it , but the sprag in your converter won't look at it like spinning a fan then putting a steel rod through it to stop it. it dumps all kinds of torque, but the fan blades break. 10+" clutches have preload springs in them to take the shock torque of dropping the clutch. your auto tranny wasn't designed for that. the same kind of thing can happen to an auto if you rutn the hell out of it and it shifts to second with a shift kit. i have broken too many c-4's manually shifting them 1-2 at 6900 with a 302.

Is it worse to floor it from a stop up till like 60mph....OR is is worse to floor it while you do like 25mph so the tranny downshifts from 3rd and hooks second up to 60mph?

What would wear things out faster..? Whe're talkin a 4r70w btw.

Neither situation is bad for it at all.

EDIT: crap. i didnt read any of the replys. not used to the new forums yet... that gap after the first post is odd.

You guys keep talking about bad things for overdrive! What is bad for overdrive because I am just not getting it! And I love that analogy about holding your Piss! LOL Great here is one about that neutral drop ****! That is like When your Fixing a bent bicicle rim and your spinning it really fast to see where the bend is and you try to grab on for dear life!

it is not a good idea to do a WOT shift from 3rd to O/D on these trannies becasue as soon as 3rd gear is diengaging o/d is getting engaged at the same time putting alot of stress on it. here is a thread that has different opinions on why you shouldn't even race with it on hope it helps!!

1st, 2nd and 3rd are engaged via relatively stout clutch packs - they can hold a ton of power. OD is engaged via a thin band that essentially slips as it is engaged. On a relatively high HP, even one with a lot less power than my car, allowing a 3-4 shift at WOT will kill the tranny - even doing this one time. On cars with less HP, it's still a bad idea and will eventually kill the tranny.

You also should not do 4-2 downshifts - because of the way the the internal mechanisms work, this also will kill a tranny in short order. In fact I NEVER use OD except on the highway. And if I am on the highway and have to pass, I first hit the OD button off the throttle, then get on it in 3rd.

Neutral drops - leave that to the ricers...

Yea maybe I am exageratting I don't know the actual rpm but I do have 4.10's and it is a high rpm probobl around 4 Grand So It doesn't hurt the auto to push the button while in o/d and let it drop into 3rd. But if I were to be in 3rd with o/d off and be going 110 and push o/d on that will hurt it Is that right??? Also 1-2-3 shifts don't hurt an auto tranny right! and just the other day I tried to hold my pee after drinking Alcoholic beverages and couldn't LOL! love these analogies!
