Long block is just a term for an engine bottom end that has the heads bolted on. When you take the heads off, it's now a short block.

Carbs are just a personal preference. Most Fox guys tend to favor the EFI in terms of tunability. Carbs require a little more skill to tune.

I strongly disagree with this statement. Carbs take a different tuning skill.

Basicly its for emissions. If the car came with a carb, I'll take it! If it came efi and is now carb it can be a royal pain to register it and have it go through emissions.

Exactly, in my state a carbed motor in a car that didn't come with one will not pass emissions for sure.

Carbs are an old school way of tuning that not a lot of younger guys have experience with. In real cold conditions a carb might be harder to start/run, and in a cold to hot swing might need to be manually tuned to perform the same, which some people steer clear of.

If your not scared of a carb they are cleaner, easier to work on and cheaper to "tune".

EFI has been standard on cars for so long most guys don't understand how a carb works any more. In 1985 people were avoiding fuel injected cars because they didn't understand them and thought you couldn't work on them. now its the opposite. I have to re-learn all the carb stuff since I just did a 5.0 swap into an 84 an went with a carb. To me EFI=cleaner, better mileage, easier starting, no problem trips thru the mountains. Carb=cheaper to set up, cleaner looking engine bay, fewer parts/less complex.

Nothing wrong with the carb its just different. I thought people steered away from the 86 because it made head swapping more difficult because of the way its designed. Correct me if Im wrong....

true Flattop pistons make 86s basically unable to clear almost any aftermarket heads or cams.

People probably steer clear of the car because most likely it was originally an EFI car if it was an 86. I wouldn't go near an original EFI mustang that was converted to a carb either.
I'm not really sure if any early run 86's had carbs to begin with, maybe someone else can answer that.
I believe in putting newer setups on an older car, but not vice versa.

i wasn't referring to any one car...I remember when the 86's were coming out an they were efi, a lot of my friends wanted to get the left over 85's cuz of the carb. people just fear the unknown, now carbs are the unknown.

Some 86's came carbed from the factory I believe. I wanna say EFI came out mid year and they were still getting rid of the last of the carbed models in 86 as well. I could be completely wrong, but I seem to remember reading it somewhere not too long ago.

Ya, that's why i mentioned to check into it.
I've looked through alot of for sale ads to get an idea of if there was some factory carbs, but the only ones i found were heavily modified, beyond what a factory carb on a fox looked like so it was hard to tell.

I love my carbed 89 notch. i love the dual quad setup that i run in my 440bb. i hate EFI, in fact... carbs are just a lot easier to tune for me - just a twist of the screw driver. very VERY accessible, VERY tunable.
