will 17x9 rims fit 235 tires? Or will i need 245 or higher? I have a 66 and i've heard the largest tires that'll fit are 245s if your lucky. I'm talking about not cutting out the wheel wells or modifying anything...thats too hard.

I have heard that ideally the tires should be 2" wider than the rims so you should be fine.....this is not gospel just for best road contact, even tread wear, max tire life etc.

The smallest tire you can fit on a 17" is a 245 I believe.

so if i were to get 17x8's 235's wouldn't fit? How is that possible because I've seen a lot of people that have 17 inch wheels on their 66's and from what i've heard the widest tire you can put on is 245s on 65-66's without modifying.

I have 17x8" wheels on my 66 mustang

245/45 in the rear

225/45 in the front

My fender lips are rolled

You can put a 235 tire on an 8" wide rim. Heck, I have 225s on mine, but I wouldnt go any skinnier than that!

according to the "Chart".......

The Tire chart I have says a 66 Mustang will take a 17 x 7" Front Rim with 4.25" backspace, and a 205/50-17" tire
Rear you can go 17 x 8" with 4.50 backspace Rim with a max 235/45-17" tire.

You may be able to go beyond these numbers with some fender rolling, or lifting of the car. These numbers are based on stock ride height, and stock suspension.

Did you all forget my chart!!!!!

Sheesh I get a job and can't post during the day anymore and what happens....you all forget me.

HIt up the super duper modified tire and wheel chart on my site:

http://www.dodgestang.com/mustang.htm

In a nut shell:
Rear: 235 45 17 no mods needed.
Rear: 245 45 17 sometimes you need to roll the fender depending on a lot of factors
Rear: 255 40 17 with fender rolled

Front: 215 45 17 no mods needed if bone stock on the front end
Front: 235 45 17 no mods to fender needed if you have the shleby drop

All tire sizes qouted for a 17x8 4.75bs wheel.

17x9 is generally accepted to be too wide to fit on the car

Heh, I was about to ask how you were planning on fitting a 9in wide wheel under a 65-66 to begin with!

Im looking at torque thrust 2 wheels at a cj ponyparts. 17" x 8 with a 4.75bs, also says 6mm offset. Is that the correct wheel that your speaking of. For a 66 mustang that is.

235's will fit on a 9" wide rim but they'll look awful.

Is 17 x8 with 4.75 backspace the best rim for running on 66 coup even if I'm running 225 45 17s I will be doing Shelby drop but was wondering how much rubbing 225 45 s will have bone stock I'm going with the 225 45 17 s all around for several reasons highest being I found a deal on that size VOGUE high performance 60000 mile warranty tires 77 bucks each I'm also buying B and G rod works old school gunmetal 17x8 rims with 4.75 backspace or I can get 17x8 s with 4.5 backspace and wondering if I am correct in thinking 4.5 would stick a quarter inch further out ?
