Wheel Spacer Saftey

How safe are wheel spacers? Is there any proper way to run them without worrying? I am going to run 15x10 Draglites with 275/50 MT Street Radials....Probably gonna need a 1/4"spacer.....i saw K.C. 90 GT post from back in May and he ran the same combo but needed a 1/4" spacer

I think a lot of it depends on the type of spacers you use. If you run a quality billet aluminum or steel hubcentric spacer, you should be pretty safe for the most part. You may fail tech at a track though. I'm not particularly familiar with NHRA/IHRA rules, but I believe if you run a spacer, you have to use longer hardened studs, and the lugs have to be able reach a certain point on the studs. A lot of us 94/95 guys run spacers in the rear to bring the wheels out even with the edge of the wheel wells, so it doesn't look quite so narrow in the rear.

Some people have luck with rear spacers, but a few guys on here have had issues with wheels coming off. Whether due to spacers or not, Im not sure, but both guys had spacers, and both lived in Jersey (maybe something with the roads down there???). I am thinking of running spacers on my pony rims, to pull them out closer to the edge of the wheel well, but have been cautious because of the few guys who had issues.

I have run spacers up front and never had an issue, but never out back!

I have wheel spacers now (a good billet set). I also have these special lug nuts that kind taper so the thread actually goes down inside of the spacer. I recommend those highly. It is a lilt tricky to put the wheel on because you have to get the taper in the spacer hole. But I have yet to experience any problems. I am running the with some 18in giovannis and 45 series tire.

click on link below i run these spacers. if you run a spacer with good quality metal as StangGT1995 states above you should be safe but there is a proper way to put these spacers on read the instructions that come with spacers alot of people don't follow these instructions it isnt fun but the installation instructions state to clean hub/rotor properly to achieve a flush mount and tells you how to do this properly you dont just pull the tire off and install spacer you will need to clean surface until flush or flat mount can be achieved i used a scraper, cleaning fluid and sandpaper to achieve this then you install spacer and wheel torquing all lugs to factory specs. and lists what to look for if not properly mounted (then drive 10 miles remove wheel and check the torque of the spacer. if retorquing is needed retorque tighter drive 10 miles and repeat step in parenthesis until spacer remains properly seated) recheck at 100 miles and repeat steps in parenthesis if retorquing is necessary.there should be 0 loss of torque on rechecks if you have any loss tighten and retorque drive and recheck as stated above. i have had the spacers in link below about two months there and i have made 7, 1/4 mile passes at the dragstrip and street driving on spacer so far with no problems.

Those spacers look real good...the ones for the foxbody are only offered in one inch....what backspacing should i then go with with a 15x10 rim...my original plan was 6.5 backspacing with a 1/4" spacer

The only spacers we can touch at discount tire are the ones that are torqued down to the original studs and have a new set that you can retorque the wheels on with....If i were to ever run a set of spacers...which i wont...they would be a set like i have described.....They seem to be the safest. Plus if thats the only spacer that a nationally known tire company will work on..it has to be good enough for everyday use, catch my drift?

Why do you need a 10" wheel for only a 275? Either go with a narrower wheel or a wider tire.

Not to pi*s in your cornflakes here, but if Discount Tire told me the sky was blue, I'd have to go outside to check. These are the same people who tried to remove my wheel locks with an impact, breaking my key, then beat a socket on and still couldn't get the wheels off, all the while never telling me about any of this. To add insult to injury, they flat out refused to compensate me in any way for this, until I called the corporate office on my cell phone, directly in front of the manager. The only thing I got out of that was a new set of wheel locks, no discount for having to come back a second day for them to finish the job that they f'ed up on the first time. I ended up having to chisel my studs off and replace them. They'll never touch my car again.

No worries at all, i do work with a couple people who cant do their job for ****...I have never had a problem getting wheel locks off with an impact gun. The store I work in def would have treated you a lot better than that....If we screw up a stud in any way we will either install a new stud on spot or send you to someone else with a voucher to get a new stud installed for free. The only time I have had to remove a lock with a socket was when either a) a cumstomer lost or didnt have the key any more or b) their key was already screwed up. In which case we will either sell you a new set or provide you with a whole set at our cost if we screwed them up...Usually when the locks are screwed up and we have to use a socket to get them off we wont tell the customer about it unless we have done something like scratch a wheel or something...In which case if we did screw it up we wouldn't tell you because we already know what we would have to do: install a new set. So we would just save time and install a new set and leave the new key in with the paperwork...but it is kind of rare at the Discount I work at that we screw anything up...Our manager is a tight ass and likes to fire people over simple little things...Sorry bout your bad exp. tho....

Personally I wouldn't run a spacer unless I had aftermarket wheel studs, longer that is.. You run the risk of the lug nuts not having enough threads to bite on to.

I wouldn't run anything other than hub centric wheel spacers on a street car...
