i was thinking about getting a cheap set of 15x7 or 8 inch wheels for drag radials when i go to the track but i'm not sure on a few things..whats the correct spacing needed for the wheels and whats the widest tire i can fit in the back with a 7 inch rim or an 8 inch rim without any clearance issues?

The best way to figure this out is to call around and find out which tire shops can measure for the widest tire package. Sometimes they will charge for the service or throw it in for free if you buy the tires from them.

If you roll or cut the inner lip of the rear wheel well opening I believe you can fit a 255mm or 10" wide tire on an 8.5" rim with 4.5" backspace. of course that is just what it looks like on my car.

I know that a 15x8 fits on a '65, so I would safely assume that a '66 would also.

I believe that I used 4" BS. the more backspacing, the further the wheel will fit into the wheel well. 255 is tight, but can be made to fit- be sure that your axle is centered.

A 255 is not tight, there is room to go bigger.

I dont think a 4" BS is correct for a 8" wheel.
