wheels and tires, ponies or no ponies?

I need new tires, so I am at a point where I need to decide whether I should upgrade to 17" wheels or just stick to the 16" ponies and just buy tires.

So option A: 17x8 cobra r's with 245/45/17 BFG T/A KDW tires
And option B: keep the 16x7 ponies and get fuzion zri 245/50/16 tires

the question for option b is, would that tire size be ok for ponies? I could spend maybe ~$400 on just tires, or ~$1000 on wheels and tires.

I'm staying 4 lug.

I'd say stick with your ponies over the Cobra R's. Almost everyone runs the Cobra R's anymore. Also some pics of your car would help make our opinons more valid.

It's your car do what want. people all have opinions but thiers is about what they would want on thier car. Cobra R's still look good on the right fox and so do ponys. I gave up on opinion polls, like it are hate it it's mine.

I personally do not care for the looks of a 5 spoke wheel with 4 exposed lugs, I have R's on my 91 and can't wait to dump them.

I had cobra Rs in black on my coupe for a while and loved em but sold them to fund the new motor build. Since then I have come across some super clean Ponies and ******ed em up for the time being. Ide stick with the ponies and get some good tires for em. I liked my BFG Gforce sports in a 245.

I would buy Pony R's before i'd buy Cobra R's. Anymore not many people have the '95s anymore because they're so damn played out. On the right car (like a nice lowered GT) i think they look good. I'd personally run '98 Cobras first, but out of the choices you listed i would still opt for 17 inch Pony R's over Cobra R's. If someone would make a 3 inch dished version of the Pony R's....man those would SELL.

Yeah I'll probably keep the ponies if I can run a 245/50 tire without losing anything.

Pony or Ten Hole.. Which One Will Fill The Wheel Well Best?

Since this is a pony thread I will ask the question. Is there an offset difference bewtween the ten hole and the OE Pony wheels? Will the OE Pony's reduce some of that "sucked in look" on the rear my slightly lowered (Motorsport B) Fox? I am thinking 245/50-16 BFG Radial Sports all the way around. My Fox presently has the ten holes with 225/60-15 junky Sears/Michlin tires.

What does everyone think of firestone firehawk wide ovals? I think I've decided to get some in 245/50/16s and keep the ponies. It's a 90 though and i've heard that they didn't make the wheel well larger until 91. Anyone had any problems getting larger than stock tires fit on a pre 91 mustang?

I would go ponies or evn back to 10 holes. I agree on 2 points above: Cobras are everywhere, and 4 exposed lugs on a 5 spoke wheel just doesn't look right.

Ive had 245s on the front of my 90 for a couple years now without any trouble. One set was on some ponies, another on some 17" cobra Rs. They rubbed ever so slightly with the front lowered but some slight rolling of the fender lip made it go away. Every car is different, so try it out and see what happens! I will be runnin 245/50/16s again after the motor is built.

OE Pony's and 245/50-16 BFG G-Force Sport Tires

Pony R's would be nice if you can get them. Seems like they are on backorder forever.

I picked up an outstanding set of OE Pony wheels yesterday I will probably go with the 245/50-16's in the BFG G-Force Sport at all four corners. Any feedback on those tires? Does 245 vs 225 make that big of a difference in handling? Some posts say the 225 handles better due to a better sidewall relationship with the rim size. I just hope there is not any rubbing on my B springed 89 Hatch!

Mahfiveoh. I like the looks of your car. Any issues with rubbing? How much is your car lowered?

When I bought my car, it had 245s on Pony wheels and IMO they had too much of a bulge from the width difference.
