wheels spacers, good idea or no???

My buddy just got 1.25 inch wheel spacers for the rear and it makes it look soooooooooooooo much tougher. i was just wondering if it is safe or not?
like does it weaken the stability of the axle or anything? i just feel uneasy about them, but they look soooo damn good

and help is appreciated

if you must go with such a large spacer, i recommend you at least throw longer, hardened studs in there. ARP makes them. That will strengthen that up a bit. I personally don't feel safe doing that, but aht will make it stronger anyhow.

It's better to run no spacer at all in terms of safety.

But if you must, there is a difference between the $100+ Max motorsports spacers and the $25 pep boys spacers.

I would run a set of hardened studs with them as well.


I was thinking of spacers as well for my stang. The rear of the 99+ cars looks sucked in. But i think a set of 10.5" wide rims and 315's should fix that problem instead

If you need to go that thick, you would be foolish to go with anything except the Maximum spacer. $75 saved is not worth risking your life on an inferior product.

90K with 1" hubcentric spacers ....

They do add an aggressive stance.

I love what the 1.25" spacers did to the way my car looks as well. I've had them for about 2 years now. The only problem I've had is when I had my car inspected this past December, they didn't torque down the tire correctly. This lead to the wheel to wobble on the studs, but caught it before any damage was done to the car.

Here's a shot of my car with them on and hopefully you can see with the angle, how the tire comes to the edge now.

I remember reading an article about wheel spacers when I was big into 4x4s and Jeeps. This is what I remember....

The wheel spacers put a lot of stress on the axles, plus your suspension gets all jacked up. The suspension was designed with the centerline of your wheel to be at a certain point. By moving the centerline of your wheels outward, you mess with the geometry of the suspension. And that's why backspacing is really important when replacing the factory wheels with aftermarket ones.

In short, they are not recommended. Ask yourself, is it worth the accelerated wear and tear of your axles?

I would only use them on the rear...there is no cause for worry at the rear anyway...the ONLY thing it can do is put more load (minimal) on your rear axle bearings...no big thing! No catastrophic failure will occur...these spacers are used on ROCK CLIMBERS!! More torque than you will probably EVER load the spacers with. Hardened studs are NOT required! When bolted together the wheel/spacer/axle is like one solid assembly!

Up to you of course, but I say go for it man.

A 1" - 1.25" spacer is going to have no significant impact on parts longevity. Hardened wheel studs are not a nessesity, but they wouldn't hurt either. You will need to trim them though. Every 1" - 1.25" spacer I've seen is the kind that bolts the end of the axle and then the wheel bolts to an offset group of lug studs. Hardened studs are almost always longer than stock and they will not fit some spacers, they will need trimming.

Hub-centric is the way to go (maximum motorsport, H&R, etc...). And (BTW) the car will handle better. Be sure you install them correctly and you will be fine.

Probably...just make sure they are 6061 billet alum. with pressed in 'quality' studs. The big names are fine. Here is a link to where I got mine...these folks are great AND they price their spacers (made to their own specs) VERY reasonably!
