My engine has been out of the car for six months, during which time I have given it a make over. The original plan was then to clean and repaint the engine bay and re-install the engine and then think about getting the car re-sprayed.

However a number of people have suggested that now is the time to get the car painted, when the engine bay is empty, as this will avoid getting the clean engine covered in overspray.

What is the best course of action? Opinions and comments welcome.

i had mine painted with the engine in ti because though i wouldnt bring the car back after i thought about it,well any way, i get the car back and theres over spray on every piece of chrome, aluminum, rubber and powder coating,it was a mess and took forever to clean up.Ended up up pulling the motor and re painting everything myself.

when i had mine painted, i already the newly detailed engine/tranny in the car, the body shop was really good about keeping the engine bay clean. first they covered the engine with blankets then they masked off the entire bay with masking paper and lots of tape. i did get some little bits of overspray in places but it was over the dust from the bodywork and just sitting in the shop for 8 months, it was pretty easy to clean up.
