Im considering working on an lx project car....i plan on pushing 450-500hp but i dont need to exceed this....it will be street/show car and probably wont be raced much if at all.....My question is would i technically need to switch from 2.5 to 3 inch exhaust if im pushing somewhere between 450-500?...or could i still use the 2.5 and not have any problems.......any replies are highly appreciated and thanks in advance!

ok..im thinking about staying around 450-475....i dont think i will exceed that unless i run nitrous but like i said i dont plan on racing so nitrous would just be part of the "show" package....so if im at 450-475 i shouldnt need to change to 3 right? or would you think it would be a good idea to go ahead and do 3?....thanks for the reply also.

Well...it does look cool

well im wanting to stick with a mac l/t and mac x pipe with flowmasters....i figure there would be a problem getting a 3 inch mac x pipe and thats one of my concerns.....if i can stay 2.5 without sacrificing any performance i would rather do so.....

yeah i definitely agree with you there......my only drawback about this whole mess is the VA laws.....they make you have cats on ur cars....sux when ur trying to build a mean street car.....i wish i could keep the 2.5 exhaust so i could switch out the mid pipe easily....with 3 inch ill have a dog of a problem i would imagine...maybe not but im not too familiar with 3 inch

This seems pretty cut and try to me. Since you plan to show the car and keep it on the street mostly, it doesn't sound like every last horsepower is your goal. Will 3" exhaust help you make more power? Probably. Will 2.5" exhaust hurt your car? Probably not. By using the 3" exhaust, you will releave a little backpressure, which may or may not help with scavaging.

If you're building a drag car or car you're going to race a lot, 3" exhaust might be a good idea, but if not, don't worry about it; use what you're comfortable with. I really doubt 3" exhaust would make or break you on the dyno either. So what if 3" exhaust netted you 25 more horsepower on the dyno...so at the show you can say "my car dyno's at 475 hp"...people will still be amazed and think of you just the same if you say "my car dyno's at 450 hp". They wouldn't know the difference anyway, it's what you feel when you drive it and, which will not be noticable at that power level anyway.

I say do what you're comfortable with:nice:

Sorry for the book...
