Where am I supposed to idle at?

I have a 87 5.0 vert manual tranny. I just finished going through the checklist and by cleaning my IAC out I was able to even out the idle (woohoo)...But now I idle at around 800 rpm. The car doesnt sound funny or like it is racing. But I have to smog soon (cali car). And I was told that my idle cannot exceed 600 rpm? I loosen that idle screw and actually took it all the way out. And my car's idle does not seem to go lower. It seems to run fine and I will be changing the plugs, cap/rotor and wires tomorrow. My questions is what is the ideal idle for my car and will plugs and such help that? My TPS seems to be okay, although I may replace that as well.

Any ideas?

If it was at 600 it would probably die on you if you turned on the air or something :)

I'm almost positive they were 750 from the factory or there abouts  I'm forgetting everything lately

The stock idle is about 650 RPM for 49 State models. You could retard your timing advance to lower the idle, but Cali is uptight about that too (they often wont let you go below 8*).

Good luck.
