Where are the real tech guys

All right I have a good question, I think. I did a search to see if a t-45 would fit a 5.0. Someone said that they modified one to fit their 5.0. It didn't seem like it was that difficult. Any way here is my question. If a t-45, which fits the 4.6, can fit a 5.0, and if the new 05 mustangs have the same 4.6 blocks, then can't (in theory), the new 5 speed auto's mounted on the 4.6's be made to fit a 5.0. Because if they can, that would be sweet :D

anything is possible with enough money. there isn't a bell housing made for that application currently but hey if you want to design it go for it.

With the right tools, you can make almost anything fit on anything. In this case, you will need to custom a bellhousing that will bolt up to both the 5.0 and the 5spd auto. I still don't understand how you would be able to remove a bellhousing that is integrated to the transmission and make it fit flush on a new housing. But I guess my first statement can answer that question.

Yea I thought the only difference in the T5 and the T-45 was the bellhousing?

Nope, the T-5 and T-45 are nothing alike except for the fact they can use the same shifter. The t-5 was designed by Borg Warner and the T-45 is s tremec design.

The two trans do not even look alike

The t-45 is a longer wider transmission. The main difference is the T-45 bellhousing is part of the transmission case. It isn't like a T-5 where you can unbolt it. Because of that, the bellhousing is drilled for the 4.6L modular bolt pattern and nothing else. It will not work with a 302/351 block.

In '01, for switched to the tremec 3650 trans in the Mustang, and it's the same thing. Integrated bellhousing drilled for the 4.6 bolt pattern.

Of course, with $$ and custom work, you can make anything fit...but with a 302 you are stuck with a T-5, or one of the 3550 series trans.

I too heard of someone fitting a t45 to a 302. How would you go about cutting the bellhousing off and drilling holes for it?

the t45 you are thinking about are the 94-95 cars, am I correct? A friend has a t45 in his car that is from a 94-95 5.0 car, I think they still had the bell housings, or did they have t5's? I dont know. But I do know that with the 96+ t-45's they hgave integrated bellhousings and you can not put them in a fox, or it would take alot of creative work to do that

Plus the '05 5-spd is a remotely shifter transmission. This means the shifter it bolted to the car, not the top of the transmission much like a FWD car.

i think thats what 5.0 nostalgia meant when he said "top loader," even though the t-5 isn't a top loader, a true top loader hasn't been used since the '70s.

That is what I was referring to. I know that it's not a true muscle car toploader, like the four speeds. The toploaders were assembled from the top of the case. I just meant that the shifter is not a direct connection. The Tremec 3550 is the closest thing we will ever get to another real toploader. Just seems like the new ones will promote error and raise strength questions.

Does anyone know why Ford went with that setup? I thought they were using the same TR3650. Would there be issues getting it to fit with the new chassis?
