Where to buy AFR heads? Are they all the same? Cam sugg. for CA?

When looking for AFR heads should I be shopping around based on only price/availability, or are there other things to look out for? I have heard that not all distributors sell the exact same head - for example some buy bare castings and build them up themselves while others ship the complete assembled head as built by AFR. Not sure about that info, just something that I have heard mentioned.

Also, what CA emissions legal cam would you recommend? Nothing too extreme - looking for a little more 'lump' and power than stock, but NEED to pass emissions and don't want to hurt low end power much at all. Was thinking of the Crane 2031, for example.

Ed Curtis can take care of you. He can grind you a cam for 165's that will pass the sniffer, done it before.

Thanks for the replies. I've heard both good and bad things about the E cam - so I'm not sure who to believe on that. I've definately heard of Ed Curtis and his customs cams. Would definately consider calling him about that, but wasn't sure if he did emissions legal stuff.

As far as my first question - does any know anything about any variations in the AFR 165 head? Again, I've heard rumor that they are not all created equal - whether that be a difference in springs or valves or something else, I'm not sure. The price doesn't vary much from different vendors, but wondering if the cheaper vendors are that way for a reason.

they wont pass the visual, so i put my original headers and h-pipe back on, do the test, pass and then put the long tubes on again and wait 2 years to do it again, that is why i got the e-cam. its a pretty good cam, i like it, the only thing is the idle issue that comes with it, when i got my car tuned it fixed the idle problem.

good luck with what ever you go with
