Where to buy plastic and plastic molds?

I have an idea about something I would like to make...but I have no idea where I would get the parts needed.

Basically I would need a plastic mold so I can make a shape out of wood, or other material and use it to make a mold that I can duplicate the shape in normal plastic.....the same kind of plastic that is used for console parts or dash parts. You know, easily drilled but sturdy.

Also, where can you buy that kind of plastic that would be used in a mold?

Like for instance, say I wanted to make a custom gauge pod that fit on the dash. I would use wood or something to make what I want, but I would want to then copy that shape in plastic so it could be reproduced over and over.

Jesus, after re-reading that....I sound like a complete moron. Sorry for the "I need really dumb help...but I am going to be wicked vague about what I need help on" questions.

It depends on the complexity of your design. I went through this exact same process (a few times), and it's a huge learning experience. Click the link in my sig to see the results.

For simple shapes with no undercuts, you could vacuum form the part. This way, you make a "male" mold and then heat/pull plastic over the part to make more.

For more complex shapes, or those with undercuts, you'll need an injection mold. Be prepared to spend well over 10 grand for this, not including the number of parts you want made. This is not a DIY job, trust me, I would have done it!

I'd be happy to help if you have further questions. BTW, the plastic used in most gauge pods is ABS.

is it going to be a one off piece or are you trying to mass produce?
for a couple of custom pieces I would use fiberglass and foam.
