I bought an 8inch from a 65 that's going into my 65. It doesn't have any of the brake parts on it. No drums , nothing. Is it worth spending the cash on it or should I look for a complete rear? Gears are 2.90 I think. Are there any sources for the parts? Which donor cars are true bolt up jobs. And I don't have power brakes. Thanks

You might want to look into putting on disks since you have nothing. Any classic mustang vendor will have brake parts.

You will need drums, shoes, springs, lines, backing plate, etc. Probably about $250 worth of parts. You might be able to find a drum to drum rear for that price. You may want to consider buying parts used.....except for shoes and springs. They should be new. Used drums can usually be turned.

I picked up a 8 inch rear with drum to drum for 300$ from kentucky mustang. I also got the v8 spindles with drums for 200$. I'll be switching to discs later but for fifty bucks extra on both ends to get the drums as well, I don't think thats to bad.

What's the machine work going to run me to have the Explorer axle? Is it an 8.8? My buddy has a 9" that he said I could have for a $100 but it needs to be shortend for my car. I think it's from a van. Machine work and new axles would prob cost @ 500-600 right. Thanks

More feedback in case you got sticker shock on the Currie site. I know I did when I looked at it. :(

Unless you're building a strong motor and running slicks at the track, you should find a junkyard 8.8 (edit, out of a newer Mustang) and put that in. The mods are pretty simple, it's the right width, modern brakes (even if they are drums). Plus, you can find them. I've been going through this, because I'm putting an 8 in my car. There's absolutely no way to find a 50s Ford with a 9 inch around here.

I got a 31 spline 9 inch, since I'm building a 351C and eventually I think it will be too stout for an 8.8. I'd prefer to spend the money once, even if it takes me longer. I have to narrow mine and buy new axles, and then get the explorer brake kit. It'll be over $1,000 when I'm done, which really sucks IMO. On the up side, it should be plenty strong and last forever.

I will use the 8.8 because the gearing is right around the area of the 6 cylinder and it won't be too hard to find a posi or locker, If you plan on getting over 300 horses or some number like that then a 9 inch might be better, an 8.8 would be perfect for a T/C T-5 6 cyl. But it might not handle more than that....it is best for my application, I don't know about yours..

I actually have one for sale for that price! $250 gets you a complete 8" rear out of my 65. It has the stronger 8" case out of a 1967+ car and has 3.55 gears in it (still have the 2.80s too). It's gonna need axle seals and maybe a pinion seal. It's complete though-- drum to drum. It's sitting in L.A., CA and I don't want to ship it.
