Which AODS are acceptable?

Do you have to get one out of a Mustang or can we use them out of other late 80 model cars such as the LTD or the Grand marquis? What is the diff if any on these?

Any AOD transmission will work. Do NOT get an AOD-E though. The 80's cars did not have the electronic shifting so you are fine with any LTD, stang, Grand Marquis...

There's AOD's and EAOD's, the latter being electronically controlled. AOD can be operated without a computer. EAOD requires a computer. There are aftermarket transmission only computers for swaps. I know you can't operate an EAOD without the computer. It will burn up the trans. No problem for the AOD. AODs are older technology. EAOD's are in current car lines like V6 Mustangs and Ford Explorers. I have seen web articles on this swap, so surf a bit. You can use either but you have to be smart about it.

Thanks guys my cus works in a salvage and just got a grand marQ in with a rebuilt aod I have been wanting o/d since my car has 380 rear gears and know pretty much what i need to make the swap the car is an 88 model so it's regular non electronic just wnated to make sure it would work thanks.

One thing to remember... LTDs and Grand Marquis had column shifters, so attaching your stock shifter is a bit more involved. There is a procedure for flipping the shifter mechanism inside the AOD to make it the same as the console shift, but I don't know the details. I used an AOD from an '89 Grand Marquis and didn't know about the shifter issue. We got it working, but it's not quite right... Next time I have the pan off, I'm gonna fix it.

As I suspected the AOD has the same problem with column vs floor shifters as the C-4's & 6's. The linkage point is above the pivot on the AOD like the C-4 then , isn't it ? But if someone was to use an aftermarket cable linkage shifter, it wouldn't be a problem ?

But, can you just flip the lever ? On a C-4 this won't work because of the way the linkage engages the other parts inside. You have to have a linkage specifically for a floor shift application, or cut and reweld the lever to the opposite location.
