1 Vote for the MSD TFI

Notchback - I'm guessing that you mean that the Mallory is just as nice for a lesser cost, thereby winning.

Can someone explain to me the performance advantage of having a better ignition coil? Obviously more volts but I am baffled as to why that could help my car make more horses.

Thanks

I have spoken with several reputable shops about coils. I had the MSD TFI which I sent back to Summit cause it hummed and buzzed me out of the car. Unless your running an H/C/I and a full ignition set up it's not worth it to just replace the coil. The stock coil is fine.

When I get to an HCI setup, I don't think I will be able to hear the hum, so I will try again when I get to that level.

I had the same experience with an Accel Super Coil...took it back, bought the Moroso coil and no more EMI,(electromagnetic interferance) noise.

From what I`ve read, the output of the stock coil starts dropping off as the rpm`s go up.

Summit sells their own brand for something like 35bucks @40,000volts was wondering it that was worth it. But i only have cam with stock heads and intake.

I have both coils and just ended up leaving the MSD on it. It doesn't humm and works great. Although for looks the big heat sinks on the crane coil are pretty sweet looking. Maybe some day I will change them and see if there is any difference.

MSD Coils definitely make a distinct noise!

PS91 and LX91 on several projects, friends have had trouble with MSD's burning up and shutting them down intermittantly. Accell low level stuff is junk, high end stuff seems ok. I've run Mallory's unilite conversion stuff in my old fairlane for years without issues other than I can't find window rotors for it anymore. Holleys anihilator system crapped out too.

I have the MSD coil and it certainly makes noise - I've been told that if I switch to MSD 8.5mm wires, the noise will go away. I still have yet to test that theory.

I don't see how, but who knows , maybe it is the way you guys are wiring up your coil. I have the advantage of my dad being an MSD tech, so he has me do a lot of extra stuff that is not mentioned in the instructions.

I've run the ps91 on my old fox, the msd on my 95, didn't have a problem with the ps91, but the msd caused really poor idle and performance after 2 months or so, I have a full crane ignition system, and was running the lx92, no problems, but didn't really like how you mounted it and wired it, so running stock right now. I think the stock is fine unless maybe go supercharged, just my opinion though.

Well I had an MSD coil for about three years but it took a dump. I do run a supercharger and was considering to switch to the PS91.

My MSD did make noise as well. Like a cricket

So I may try the Crane

Wow, I've never heard my MSD TFI coil make any noise. If it is true about the MSD wires, when I changed the coil, I also changed the wires to the MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor wires. Never ran it on the factory wires.
