Alright, we have a new addition to the stable. It is a 2000 GT with the mods listed below. My question is which torque convertor to go with on this completely stock engine with very low miles? The car also has the factory gears which I am assuming are 327s and the 17x9s out back with some 315/35/17 meats on them. I am not trying to run 12s, I just want my wife to be able to drive the car in the occasional stop-go traffic without a horribly loose convertor BUT I want her to be able to surprise a 5spd car from a dead stop at a stop sign, etc. Which convertors have you guys used with success on the 2v motors? Any response would be appreciated.

Precision Industries Stallion series torque converter. Anything less than a 2800 stall would be a waste. However, any high stall speed converter is going to cause that "sluggish" feeling somewhat in lower rpms. Just what kind of tires are you running on the rear ? They better be pretty sticky cause if not, they're gonna spin like all get out.

EDIT: I don't see a transmission cooler anywhere in the list of mods. If you don't have one, I recommend you get one before putting a high stall converter in there.

Trans cooler is a good thought, something I have completely overlooked. Is Ford still cooling the Autos with the radiator?

Convertor wise, I dont want anything sluggish in the lower RPMs because that is where 95% of her time will be spent. There will be Nitto D/Rs when this is done. Any more advice?

Precision is right here in Memphis. I had one in my old black 88 model now that i think about it. It was waaaaay to much for a daily driver in occasioanal traffic, way too loose. Had to rev too much to get moving. I dont want her to have to do that. She will freak and think something is wrong.

Well, if you're not will to compromise some sluggishness down low, then I think the Torque converter is not something you want to look into. Ever thought of 4.10 gears ? :D

I guess I want the best of both worlds. Will a small step up from the factory stall not help the takeoff? The car will see 373s instead of 410s for fuel economy purposes. My 5 spd has 410s and it is hell on the highway at 70MPH. I just dont want a jerky convertor for her to drive everyday. Any others come to mind?

Well, you could go with a lower stall speed than 2800, like say a 2400-2600 but thats not terribly more over stock. You also have to remember that any bit higher you set the stall speed, its always going to give somewhat of a more sluggish feeling downlow. All in all, I say unless if you want to deal with the sluggishness, skip the torque converter because it probably won't be worth it. Torque converters are expensive now days. The one for my car which is the standard one most auto guys in their GT's costed 714 bucks to buy it and have it shipped to the door. Then, you have to get it installed.

As for gears, almost every automatic guy in here will tell you that anything less than 4.10 gears in the auto GT will be a waste. The gas mileage between 3.73's and 4.10's around town is about the same. The difference on the highway may be 1 or 2mpg at best. With that size of rubber on the rear, I say 4.10's, not 3.73's. Just my .02 cents.

Man it sounds like you are in a tough spot. I am going through your same issues but I have to get a converter. Everybody says 3.73's are a waste in an auto but I find it hard to believe. Honestly, you could look at adding a shift kit to your tranny. Maybe even the j-mod will help you some. Good Luck.
