Which freon gas does a 87GT have Stock A/C the old stuff or the new gas?

R12 was the orginal refrigerant, but R12 is now longer being manufactured. If you can find a shop to recharge with R12, it costs $45-$65 a pound, the system takes about 2 pounds.

If the system has been converted to R134a, the service intake fittting on top of the compressor should have a blue cap and a quick disconnect type of fitting instead of the screw on service intake fitting.

We use this stuff called freeze 12. It's an R-12 substitute. It works well and is a much cheaper alternative.

Check your local auto part stores. I think we were paying somewhere around $5.00 a can.

Just look at the contents, alot of the substitutes are propane or other flammables. You don't want flammables in the front of your car if you crash it.

See http://www.aircondition.com/ for help on alternate refrigerants. Some do not come in the 1 lb cans, and require specail handling when recharging the system.
