Which harmonic balancer?

My stock 86 5.0 balancer has given up and I need a new one. Do you guys have any recommendations? Price is a big factor here. I'm not looking for a $150 piece.

When I replaced the balancer on the '89 notch I had, I used a Professional Products balancer. Cost just about the same as a stock rubber piece, but it's made of iron so it'll never come flying apart, and the markings are very clear and easy to read on it.

A Summit or Pioneer will work well and they are under 100 bones

The iron non-SFI balancers can still theoretically come apart. With better balancers, you do find a better method of bonding (cheaper balancers tend to be press-fit).

That said, the PP unit is a decent one. Pioneer is also a good choice.

Thanks so much for the replies. My searching came up with the same choices. I wanted to get your feedback about your experiences with them. Thank you for that. I hate ordering a part and find out its junk!

I'm leaning towards the PP balancer since it "appears" to be a nice piece.

Quick question, do I need a spacer for the Professional Products dampner? If so what thickness? Thanks, getting ready to order...

It depends where you get it. Mustang resto houses will often include it but random ebay stores and places like that will often charge an arm and a leg for the spacer.

i got my spacer included with my pp balancer.it's been on for over 4 years and i just started spraying it and it still holds up.

I have a Summit SFI one, but the ring moves around the hub (over time) so its impossible to get an accurate ignition timing. So the bonding is pretty crappy. Unless this is normal, I dont know.

The two rings should not move relative to one another.

Get a new balancer ASAP.

I just replaced mine with the PP. The spacer didn't come with it, it was another 15 bucks. I got mine at 10% over cost with the spacer and all it was 98 bucks.

You will have to buy different bolt for it to.

And PP says not to turn there balancer more than 6500 rpms.

Why do you need another bolt??????

with the spacer you need a bolt that is 1 3/4 long. And if you have under drive it will need to be a allen head bolt.

+1 had to do the same thing with my PP balancer when running an UD pulley

Just so you know the bolts are 3/8 x 16 x 1 3/4.

Not sure but I will look around.

Edit: I couldn't find where to buy them online but there website said you can order them at any NAPA store.
