So I'm in the process of buying a new 89'lx hatch and I have about 2500-3000 put aside for some sort of engine mod. I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I was debating either throwing on an S-Trim running 8psi of boost or doing a complete H/C/I with the best of the best parts (AFR, Performer, custom cam). If I do the H/C/I I won't be putting a blower or turbo on it anytime soon that doesn't matter. The car is only driven on the street and will probably never see the track. Which of the two would be more fun and faster on the street?

Even if I don't ever add the blower? Would it make more usable power than a supercharged stock motor?

The supercharger will (and has been proven by 5.0 Mag.) net like 60-70 more hp on a stock motor than an HCI, however I went for the HCI first so that I might have the SC or Turbo later

That's true. And at the same price as a H/C/I package. Of course you can always get a powerpipe & milk it right?

But I can't see anyone doing an s/c, then later on having to take it out to do a H/C/I and then reinstalling the s/c

My vote is Supercharger 1st. I went the HIC way and and even a low comp short block and was stuck driving it that way for a year. I would have much rathers had a s-trim and added the HIC later

What would be quicker on the street? 300rwhp HCI or 350rwhp supercharged stock motor?

I vote for H C I. Get the motor stable first and good parts on it. That way when you do add the blower or turbo, it will fly. But the best bang for the buck is the blower first.

Its you car, do as you want. Were all just here for the ride.

either/or. if you're going to do both eventually, go for whichever. blower is easier to put on first, just don't overboost and make sure you're safe. HCI is a lot more work initially, but if you do it later on you'll just be putting it off until then.

As far as labor goes, if you're doing it yourself and don't mind redoing some things then flip a coin. If you want to do as little as possible over time, do HCI now and blower later. Otherwise you'll basically put the blower on twice if you do it now and HCI later; though it never hurts to get better at stripping/installing it over and over again. I can do it in about 1/10th the time it took me originally If you go with an A-trim/5-6lbs. boost setup you can get away with a pretty safe setup w/o a full custom tune + chip. If you go higher you're going to be pushing it as far as not tuning, and would be much better off getting one. Point being, it's not a great idea to get Tune A for now and Tune B for soon after. Unless you don't care about a few hundred bucks, then it's negligible. Or you can run an FMU if you're into those. I personally wouldn't consider it but I know tons who have without problems.

You can go back and forth all day with it. Overall you'll be happy with either choice, and the addition of the remaining upgrade later down the road will make the car another animal.

Truth be told for the longest time I wished I kept my underdriven A-trim + stock head/cam setup (had an aftermarket intake on already). I'm happy now but that setup was a blast. Put down 300/330 at the rear with it.

...it's much more fun now that everything's worked out though

Turbo on a stock motor... 350 rwhp is much easier to make with a turbo than an SC or a HCI.

Yep. That's the only one that makes sense to me. Buy the $3k turbo kit of your choice with a 70mm turbo (Quicktime, Pony Down, B&G), and you can make enough to break the block. 8psi will get you around 400rwhp, and you can crank the boost as long as you're brave enough to.

I did the same thing. I went with the HCI first. Now I wish I went with the blower first. Each time you add a part with the blower on you will feel a much bigger gain. You will really enjoy it this way and you can buy the HCI part by part and put it on instead of spending the money all at once.

I'm going blower first.. but thats because I have a SD car and dont want to tamper to much with my motor until it gives out and then i will switch over to mass air.

+ 1 blower here!

i vote for the h c i, just from a durabilty and reliabilty standpoint. we all know how much of a pain blowers can be, that and iam not sure if i would ever want to put boost to a set of 18 year old head gaskets or stock head bolts. thats just my opinion.

I've had both and I seem to like the stock longblock and 10 psi deal. It just throws people off to see a stock 302 run bottom 12's
