Im looking for some full length headers for my 331 '65. Id like to go with a 1 3/4 with 3" collectors, but its pretty damn tight so if fitting that is quite the task i may settle with 1 5/8....

WHich out of box headers have you used with your 302's and what are your opinions on the flow,clearence(bellhousing/ground), fit, quality??

im not interested in the Y design ones and they must flow well as ill be making just under 400rw on motor and will see some spray as well. appearence doesnt matter too much. for refrence it is a t5 car and it probably makes a big diff but steering is still undecided so im not sure where this may hurt extra room avail...

anything u guys have to say will help

Thanks

yea thats what ive been seeing... any clearence issues with the steering shaft, lakewood or manual equipment?

I've been pretty happy with my Hooker Super Comps.

They have a 1 5/8" primary tube and 3" collectors.

The 1 3/4" headers are a little harder to come by.

I have had many sets over the years...
Hedman
Hooker
Flowtech
Blackjack (when they still made car headers)
Cyclone

The "generic" 1 5/8" design of these brands are all nearly identical. The primary and collector flanges are the only difference I have ever found...
They all have crappy paint when new.
They all fit floor shifters, but not column shift.
They all need the power steering drop bracket.
They all need spacers to fit with a C6 tranny.
They all have a couple of header bolt locations that need to be started with the header away from the head a bit. Due to a couple of primary pipes that turn backwards quickly and limit bolt clearance once the headers is against the head.
I have found all have good ground clearance.
I have never had a frame or car clearance issue, except when using a C6... You must use a bare exhaust flange to space the headers away from the heads a bit, along with longer header bolts.
None are compatable with header studs or allen bolts.
They all need some weld boogers cleaned from the primary entries if you want them perfect.

This is my take on the good ol' generic Ford passenger car header. Once you start talking specialized headers and fancy names, then there are surely differences... the last time I checked, Hedman doesn't even make the 'standard' design anymore. They have gone more specific on the applications.
