Which Transmission with Crate Engine?

Real world dynos from friends... Just look it up on the internet... 345 - driveline lose + over rating = no where near advertised hp.
I had that exact same crate motor in my old stang and it would put down 285 on the dyno all day long. It may not the best value for the horsepower but I tell you it is reliable as you can get. I would take it to the strip every week and out on saturday nights for 2 years straight, put over 40,000 miles on it this way and never broke a thing on the motor. I then put a supercharger on it and ran it another 1.5 years and put another 20,000 on it. Then sold it to my friend 4 years ago who still has it and has put 80,000 miles on it and has never been in the shop for motor repairs and still puts down almost 400 to the wheels with the supercharger. Can't get any better than that for the money!

I have 10,000.00 to spend on an Engine, Transmission, and Labor. So which set up would you guys reccomend?
Thanks

thats a pretty nice budget, with that kind of money i would suggest a keith kraft crate engine a bud of mine has the 331 i belive and let me tell you its FAST!!!!!!!! and yes the hp is rated @ the fly wheel and not the wheels.

Which ford part number is the tremec 3550?
Tork capacity?
I cannot remember what it was, sorry. But they should all be the same I would think as long as you say 3550 and not a TKO tremec. I do not think you can go wrong with that motor honestly. Sure everyone will tell you to get a DSS or something else that will get you more power and the block will handle more power alot later. But who really needs more than 400 to wheels anyway? While most of them are fixing stuff a couple of times a year and cars in the shop you will be driving yours. By the way the car I was telling you I used to have was my daily driver too.

I know, I know, we all do thats why I now have a 347 stroker with a vortech. But you have to remember the higher you go with HP the less driveable the car will be for everyday driving, Especially with this kind of block. I still have a stock block and I am pushing 600 at the motor, almost 500 to the wheels now. If you plan on pushing that kind of power you have to get a girdle, bigger oil pump and shaft and suggest ARP studs and ARP head studs and the motor might hold up for awhile which is what I am hoping because it is not supposed to handle that kind of power, and that is not reliable high HP transportation. Any more than that and you should get the DSS or others with 4 bolt mains if you want it to last.

I just think with 5.0 motors over 500 HP at the wheels and reliability with the a stock block do not go together unless DARE I SAY IT, YOU GO MODULAR.

i can understand your reasoning and partly agree with you, i would have to say that drivability is only as well as your tune, and i would feel more comfortable with a 4 bolt to handle power over 500, but like i said a good tune goes a long way. and just for the record a dss block is very over rated (IMO) it is a stok block as well with a main cap girdle myvette has well over 400 hp and drives great in the city. just my 2 pennies

o6 c6, i bought it for my self when i finished college, it is awsome, i still enjoy diving my fox body though, the vette is like a rocket and the fox is like a go cart with a rocket attached to it!! LOL

Those are nice. Wish I could afford one right now. I got a 84 thats my wifes in excellent shape. It has the grand sport wheels and paint but without the stripe. Fun car to drive. For some reason I can have fun in a vette without doing anything to it but with mustangs I cant and have to build them up. Funny.

:nice: i spend way to much on the stang, also vettes are a little pricey, but what alot of people dont realize is that they are extremely fast cars and alot of people are not ready to handle that kind of power so to get to my point, there are always rwrecked vettes at auctions and what not, also being that they are "status symbols" to some( i just like to haul a$$) drug dealers loose them to the police all the time and can be found a police auctions as well, thats where i got mine, way cheaper than dealer. any way ill syop talking about that as i dont want this thread to get too off subject. :D

I made up my mind finally. I'm going with a new, not a rebuilt, 330 tork capacity Tremec built T-5. I know if I went the the TKO I woudn't have to worry when I add more hp, but after dumping all this money on an engine, transmission, and labor, it will be a real long time untill I can afford to add hp. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. The new T-5 is more affordable, less money spent on parts for converting to a TKO,less for clutch and clutch plate, and less labor intensive. Plus I have my old T-5 for a back up. I don't baby my car, but I don't beat the crap out of it either. At the track I launch at 3000-3500 rpms, don't dump the clutch, release the clutch with my foot on it as quick as possible, and I don't power shift, and I run drag radials not real slicks ,which can kill a transmission. I ran my old stock motor which has 300 tork with my stock T-5 which handles 300 tork and never had a problem. Raced every weekend that I could. The new Ford Crate engine I'm purchasing puts out 305 tork and the upgraded T-5 handles 330, so I'm thinking it should be fine. Ireally appreciate everyone's help! Thanks!
The next hp mod, in about 3 or 4 years!, would be a Ken Belle 6-8psi blower. Am I right or wrong here. Doesn't a blower actually decrease tork because of the parasitic drag ? So a heavier tork capacity transmission wouldn't be in need?

A blower will increase everything...including torque.

I dunno, if you like the TKO, I would save up the pennies and buy that. A TKO will be able to withstand the punishment from the kenne belle. But with the T-5 it'll be a ticking time bomb.
