I have a bone stock 1993 GT / manual transmission / 127,000 miles / original gears / tranny works fine and is not noisy / new wheels / new BFG g-Force Sport tires.
1) When I reverse, I hear a whining sound. I don't know if this is normal as this is my 1st fox and I bought it used. The whining sound was never as pronounced in the 2000 w/T-45. (I expect a little whine in reverse, but not this much - I do realize that foxes do have less sound deadening.) Sound comes from rear of car.
2) Also, at any speed over about 25 mph, I hear a slight whump-whump-whump noise/vibration coming from the rear of the car and whump sound/vibration increases w/ speed.
My chrome ponys recently started to peel. I just replaced the wheels w/ some new silver ponys for now and the tires are brand new. I watched the installer balance the tires and they balanced fine. (I installed tires for 3 years and everything was done right - I did request that the wheels be "taped" though, because I hate how the lead weights scratch the paint and I intend to get the balance checked once a month anyways.) BTW, I experienced the same whump sound/vibration w/ the old wheels and tires. This should be eliminated as a possible issue.
3) If anyone has experienced this and is pretty certain about what the problem is, approximately how much would I be looking at for repair? (Not worst case scenario, but a roundabout, general number between best case and worst case.) I hate going to the shop and not having enough money...LOL. The rear end has not been serviced since I owned the car, but will be very soon. I am fairly mechanically inclined, but I don't have the proper tools/knowledge for rear-end work.
I am wondering if it is the axel bearings. (Maybe the ring and pinion.) I did not notice any play in the wheels when the car was up on the air, but if I was an expert, I wouldn't be posting this.
