Whining from my tranny or rear end, which one is it and what can be?

I have a pretty loud whining noise in my 4th and 5th gear. It only happens when im cruising, but not when i lift off the gas or accelerate. I thought it was my tranny at first but today I was driving around without the radio and I noticed I cant really tell where its coming from. Could it be my rear end? I put the back seats down and it sounded like it may have been coming from the back. Where could I go to firgure out what it is?

well, then for you NIN, I'm almost positive it's your pinion bearing... possibly the carrier bearing... kinda labor intensive to have a shop do it, about $400-500 all done... but that's what I think yours is...

It might be your u-joints on your driveshaft. I know that if it's going bad, it can make a whistling noise at a certain speed of rotation.

Mine was a trans problem

I have a 94 gt, had same issue. I was trying to trouble shoot for a few weeks, then trans started slipping when passing someone at a slightly accelerated speed, i.e. foot stomped to the floor. just a little slip at first but within a week it was slipping when ever OD was activated, turn OD off and slipping was almost non-existent.
I still thought it was gears but trans shop told me gears in trans were bad. They actualy had to pull trans out a second time to fix, they did not road test car to verify all issues with trans.

Yeah, and I noticed today it does it in the higher rpms of 3rd too. How do I check these things? Can I swap it myself? Im gonna be takking out the tranny for my clutch soon so maybe that would be a good time.

well, the good news is that the pinion gear is pretty straight-forward to change... it just require lifting up the car, w/o any wheels, removal of the drivetrain, and entire rear end, then refitting the bearings to the gears, re-setting the allignment (if you bumped it at all), then refilling the rearend w/ your favorite fluid... shouldn't take you (assuming you understood what I'm talking about) more than a solid day, less if you had some help, which you will NEED

-or, take it in to a drivetrain shop, and have then listen to it...

ONE MORE THING, almost forgot... does it do the noise when the clutch is in, on the freeway? like, you're cruising, then put in the clutch, let me know if the noise is still there w/ the clutch pedal down.

I dont think so but I better check to make sure. By pinion gears, do you mean my 3.73s??? Takeing out the whole rear end and tranny doesnt sounds like fun.

The throughout bearing will whine in 4 and 5th?? What happened to the pinion gear and u joints theory?

na, I'm going to have to say it's not the throw-out bearing... when the clutch in while moving, the strain on the rear-end is gone, which is causing the strain on the pinion bearing to go away... hence the noise going away... same exact thing happened to my car, I swaped out the bearings for a good quality set, that was 8 months ago, no noise since, including a full racing season, and "spirited" driving.

(the throwout beaing would make noise even if stopped, I believe)

I had a similar issue - it ended up being a rear axle bearing. The noise was there on or off the skinny pedal and was always @ 40mph+ (4th & 5th gear).

Best thing is to lift the car and bring the car up to speed to really isolate where the noise is. It could be any of the above mentioned causes, mine just happened to be a bearing.

yeah bngracing... mine was that bearing too, but the problem was, it sounded like it was comming from the front-right engine bay area (It will be difficult to localize it that way, in my opinion at least... I've never liked having it go fast in one place before )

-or, you could just take it to a rear-end shop, and have then LOOK at it... shouldn't cost you anything but a moment of your time... and you'll have an answer.

if your hearing it thru a range of speed 3,4,5 itsmost likely a bearing.since you say its mostly when your under acceleration is a sign of the pinion bearing..you could climb under your car and grab the axle right at the rear..and spin it back and fourth to see if there is alot of play in it..or...the u joints while your down there...but the play in the rear will be a sure sign of pinion bearing or carrier pin...
another sneaky high speed whine is when the clutch packs wear out...you can jack your both tires up and try to spin them in different directions with some force in nuetral of course...if you can do it by hand then your clutches in the rear are toast!
also there is a small rubber ring on the end of your drive shaft that gets worn out and causes a grinding sound you can see if that is missing or torn also..it is on the rear side..if you spin it you will hear the sound..
